After two rounds Anand and Kramnik are together in first place.  Aronian and Morozevich are in last place.  This hurts Aronian more than anyone else, as Anand played a brilliant novelty (17...c5) to take down his opponent.  Of course, a chess game is rarely about just one move, but Kramnik and Anand took care of business last night.

I expect to see more of the same with Anand and Kramnik making very few stumbles as they show why they are the tournament favorites.

Svidler took a tremendous risk playing the Spanish Marshall and finding an early Qe2 (instead of the normal Be3).  ChessBase calls this a novelty but I know that I've looked at this with students.  Our poor analysis had always shown that this was not a good way to play.  Svidler was rewarded with a very complicated game that ended in a draw.

BTW:  For true world championship tournaments such as this one, the Category level shouldn't really matter.  The best players in the world are playing each other in a double round robin tournament.  That automatically places it in the pantheon of all-time great tournaments such as 1948 and 1953.  As the Tour de France might say, this is an Hors Category.  (Beyond definition)

Kramnik's playing like Morozevich!  Fantastic stuff!  (we're at 16.cxb5)...

I'm sure that near the end when wins are needed that we will see some Sicilians, KIDs, Gruens, etc. Maybe...

Anyway, what category is this tournament? It is amazing to see Svidler and Gelfand as the BOTTOM SEEDS!!!!!!

I see the top level's favourite openings with Black have held up :

Petroff and (anti)Marshall  v 1 e4
QID and Semi Slav v 1 d4

I can't see the 1e4 players having much joy.

By the way Gelfand missed a great chance with c5 according to Marin on Chessbase !

We FINALLY know what the pairings are.  This tournament has all the earmarks of an amateur event.  Why weren't the players given advanced notice?  Anyway, here's the pairings:

Naw, I am just not gonna bother going. I am a poor college student, and I didn't realize how far it was. Tijuana is only like a 15 minute drive, and I didn't know how far Mexico City was  Embarrassed. Oopsy, if anyone in San Diego happens to be driving down some weekend though, I will be happy to keep you company.  Wink

Corona is a very good reason to stay home and follow the tournament on internet - holding a tasty beer by the hand!

Jon,

From what I've heard, you may not have wanted to use your own car anyway.  The roads are supposed to be rough and people are looking to loot US cars.  I flew down to Mexico and used the public transport system.  It may make more sense for you to check that out than risk the drive.

Cheers!

I thought that the match started today.  Embarrassed I was considering driving down to Mexico City for the weekend to watch part of the match, but then I realized that it is 1440 miles from San Diego.

Hello All:

How is everyone going to follow the tournament?

I know the PlayChess server will have Yasser giving commentary for a part of a few games ("with a minimum of three one hour lectures per round"). Are there other good sites with video/audio commentary?

Thanks,

Gerry

Only 24 hours to go. The countdown may start!!

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Some are published http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4106. Gabriel Sargissian might be the second of Aronian, I think.

Anyone know who the seconds are ?

I only know that Leko has Petrosian his father in law and that Kramnik interestingly has Loek Van Wely- perhaps Kramnik knows he needs extra advice on the Semi Slav or perhaps the Sicilian . A bit worrying on the Sicilian as loek has often been chopped up !

Kramnik just wants Van Wely's help to refute the Semi-Slav with 5. Bg5 =) I really don't believe he will play that Meran 8. Be2 again.
or alternatively, he needs some ideas against the Nimzo or QID, which Van Wely can supply aplenty.

Kramnik should be sticking to the Petroff, and he doesn't need help there, in any case his Petroff preparation with Rublevsky and Motylev for the Topalov match remains largely unused!
