We could see some more Sicilians in the second cycle, when some players might decide that they need to go for a win with Black.  Nice to see a number of Ruy Lopez efforts.  Maybe Black thinks he's solid enough and has better winning chances than with the Petroff.

Do you suppose Morozevich (playing the Scotch today) just wakes up and randomly picks an opening the morning of his game, or do you think his decision to play the Scotch against Leko was based on more strategic principles?

Gelfand performs unexpectedly well, and Aronian unexpectedly bad.
Also Anand performs better than I thought, I thought 1.e4 makes hit hard for him win games on this high level. Also I expected almost only 1.d4 and 1.c4, but we see quite a lot of 1.e4 ...
I'm wondering, and noone seems to fear the petroff ... also the scotch got resurrected it seems.

By the way, Grischuk makes a serious claim for this tournaments brilliancy price right now!

That was  a fantastic game.  Grischuk could be on +3 now and leading the tournament if he had pulled this game out and found the right continuation against Aronian in round 3.

Tomorrow's game--Kramnik-Gelfand--could be crucial.  It seems as though Kramnik is going all-out with the White pieces, and he could use a win against his closest rivals (I'm also looking forward to Kramnik-Anand in the second cycle; Kramnik has done well against Vishy with the White pieces recently)...

If Gelfand does not lose this evening against Kramnik than he becomes a (very) serious candidate for the title. I thought wouldn't have much problems winning the tournament but it seems that won't be so simple...

It's quite remarkable how pedestrian Aronian has been made to look.  Not so long ago, it really seemed as though he was poised to join the top ranks of the elite and trade blows (win for win) with Topalov as an uncompromising player who would play to win with both colors.  The last few tournaments, he seems to have been left behind by the top of the field...

For me the top 5 are now (not in order) : Topalov, Ivancuk, Kasparov, Anand, Kramnick.

Gelfand made his win today look positively routine.  Moro is having a terrible first half to the tournament.

The Kramnik-Gelfand match should be the one to watch as the players finish the first lap of the tournament.

BTW:  Does Armenia (Lev Aronian) win the ugly flag of the tournament award?  Guh!

No, I mean if you're playing Kramnik avoid the Catalan with BOTH colours! When Aronian is down to 1 hour and Kramnik hasn't used more than 5 minutes then he was not prepared well enough.

And while it's not really 1-0 in Kramnik - Anybody the games in the last 1 or 2 years tell me it won't be much fun for "Anybody".

By the way, Grischuk makes a serious claim for this tournaments brilliancy price right now!

You mean something like:

Kramnik-Anybody
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 1-0 ?

I wonder how Aronian arrived at the decision to play the white side of the Catalan against Kramnik. OK, it might be a psychological thing, but I think he should have chosen an opening in which his opponent is not that well prepared.
