Ivanchuk was white. Bu played the Cheb as black.
Cant really claim that as an ad for the system.
Sure the Bologan book will be great as he was taught by the man himself. Perhaps can discuss this when its out. In a Cheb thread.

Cheb better against lower rateds? Cant see why - but perhaps you could explain as this might be interesting.
Slav main lines offer sufficient dynamism in my view and experience.

Meanwhile, back to Play the Slav book discussions...

Bologans new book is also very interesting.

http://www.newinchess.com/The_Chebanenko_Slav_According_to_Bologan-p-390.html

In my opinion the Chebanenko is much more better against lower-rated players.
Yesterday Ivancuk got a winning position against a sleeping Bu in only 9 moves...  Wink

>>My conclusion, and it is a personal preference, is that I do not like the resulting positions in the (e)book. If I were stronger(than I am), and looking for draws against higher rated opponents perhaps I would give it a go. But my opinion is that in many of the lines, Black has to be quite strong technically to hold the tough end of the draw.

I have heard several other people say that they have had negative experiences trying to go from the Nimzo to the Slav.  The Nimzo is a such a flexible opening with so many ways for Black to counterattack. There are numerous pawn breaks in each line.  The Slav, on the other hand, has much narrower paths.  And White can force you into a rather defensive position in many lines.  That's not to say that you can't win from those positions, but IMHO the Slav requires a very different set of skills and mentality than the Nimzo.

I really want to learn the Slav well as I feel it would be great for my chess development, but my experiences to this point have been pretty negative.  I look forward to the Vigus book to see if I can begin to make inroads into the Slav world.

Wonderful, thanks Matemax. I should have guessed the Errot one, its one of the chapters I'm most interested in Smiley

I like the 'brilliance without dazzle' aspect - it is very much how I aspire to play. It shows a realistic approach to the opening by the author, rather than a biased selection of flashy lines that all win for Black.

Rather than buying the eBook, I'm waiting for the paper copy to be released (I like the new book smell). I've downloaded the eBook sample from Everyman, and all looks good so far. But until the paper copy is released I have to ask, as my curiosity is getting the better of me - what are the 'Argentinian Defence' and the 'Errot', as mentioned in the contents page?

Now this is not the book's fault, perhaps it is the nature of the Slav.

Vigus has an intereting discussion in the introduction about the concept of  "Brilliance without Dazzle". He was talking about being able to out play your opponent without necessarily being flashy. Although, the Slav does have its share of dynamic line, there are also many  lines of this "brilliance without dazzle" nature. I suppose this is not everyone's cup of tea. But it is nature of chess, and you do find players with a wide range of styles championing the Slav.

Well, the Everyman website has once again moved this book back into the 'Out Now' section, so hopefully it will be available in paperback form very soon now.  Until I get my copy, does anyone else have anything to add to the few comments people have already made here regarding the content, based upon their experiences with the ebook?

Thanks

ANyone opinions about the book? Have you had a deeper look? Thinking about purchasing the ebook

Well, I have quickly played through many of the lines in the ebook (this of course is a great advantage of the ebook format, enormously efficient).

I am rated approx. 2000 FIDE and my main defense has been the Nimzo and the occasionally Benko. But I wanted to simplify my life and play the Slav.  I had experimented a bit with it on ICC after minimal study, but I was ready for some serious study.

Now this is not the book's fault, perhaps it is the nature of the Slav.

One thing I did find odd about the ebook is that many of the lines (from games)ended say at move 18-- I had expected that in an ebook all the game moves would be there - but I suppose it is an exact replica of the printed book.

For example, my initial attention was on the popular 6. Ne5 where Vigus recommends 6...Nbd7 7. Nxc4 Nb6. Vigus christens this previously obscure nameless line "The Sokolov Defence" and makes a strong argument for it. Having gone through some of the lines that he gives, I am surprised that this line has had so little attention before.

I checked some of my books to see what they say about this line. It is not mentioned at all in Sadler's "The Slav"

Except in his illustrative games 31 and 32, of course.

Ooops. My bad.

Justin, thanks; I had Sadler's The Slav a few years back but didn't get along with the opening then, and couldn't recall there being anything on 7...Nb6, a recollection I had thought was affirmed by antillian's comment re. the book - however, I'll now order another copy to go with James Vigus' book, as I no longer have the one I bought for some reason. Must have sold/traded it for some flashy Grunfeld tome, or the like...
I don't really want the Burgess book as I never got much use out of his Taimanov book to be honest, it's too detailed for my needs and I imagine Sadler's Slav primer coupled with Vigus will be all I'll require.

I believe Burgess has a section on this line as well, pages 216-218 in Chapter 8 of The Slav.

I'm holding out for the hard copy (for my active lifestyle), already having it on order from BookPimp.com (Amazon).

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

Thanks Antillian. I too have found coverage elsewhere (of 7...Nb6) to be distinctly lacking - I've looked in all the books you mention and it receives virtually no attention, but it appeals to me.  I'm new to the Slav too, or at least I plan to play it, so this will be key to me in this book.
