Hmm, I would have thought that "How To Play The Chess Endgames" would be very similar to the famous book of Cherechevsky "Chess Endgame Strategy". It seems particularly true when you look at the topics covered by the two books.
What do you think about that ?

Topics covered by Cherechevski (my translation from french...)

1.Basic principles
2.King centralization
3.Pawns in endings : what for ?
4.Exchange problems
5.Don't hurry
6.Schematic thinking
7.Two weaknesses principle
8.Fight for initiative
9.How to deal with opponent counterplay ?
10.Positions with isolated "d" pawn
11.Bishop pair
12.3 vs 2 majority on the Queenside
13.Complex Endings

Topics covered by "How To Play The Chess Endgames (cut and paste from Gambit)

* Basic Principles and Methods
* Activity
* Schematic Thinking
* The Fight for the Initiative
* Prophylaxis and Preventing Counterplay
* The Bishop-Pair in the Endgame
* Domination * The Art of Defence
* Typical Mistakes
* Rules of Thumb

There are 5 (on 9) topics which are the exactly the same !!

Thanks very much for the heads-up on that one Paddy. Have the Lamprecht/Muller which is impressive. Certainly look forward to the Muller/Pajeken text.

This sounds like the sort of book that Karsten and Muller should have written and that Dvoretsky almost wrote!

Is Müller and Pajeken okay? http://www.gambitbooks.com/books/PCE.html

(Btw, it's Karsten Müller and Frank Lamprecht, not Karsten and Müller http://www.gambitbooks.com/books/fundend.html)

Fundamental Chess Endings by Mueller & Lamprecht dealt mainly with precise positions. How to Play Chess Endgames by Mueller & Pajeken will deal with practically all the other aspects of practical endgame play, in other words pretty much all the professional know-how of how to handle an endgame which has not yet reached one of the precise positions. I am sure Glenn Flear's book is very good - he's a good player, a real pro, and a fine writer. But I confidently predict that How to Play Chess Endgames will just blow you away.

What intrigues me is that in the ad it says this interesting bit:

Quote:
Grandmaster and endgame expert Glenn Flear has created an in-depth book of all endgames which feature either two pieces for each side, or two pieces against one - an essential area of the game that has never before been comprehensively covered in one volume.

This book sounds more like a complement to Dvoretsky's work (haven't seen yet the Karsten and Muller one) than a substitute (of course some overlaping may exist; but to what extend?).

But boy.. I have to agree with HgMan! I've recently bought Dvoretsky's and Van Perlo's and if I buy this one as well it means over of 2,000 pages of endgames (=make it 4,000 pages of a normal chess book). I'll need to retire on a pension first.. Wink

They say you can't judge a book by its cover.

That's a real shame in this case because I want to buy it having only seen its cover!

This sounds like the sort of book that Karsten and Muller should have written and that Dvoretsky almost wrote!  I consider Dvoretsky's book to be the best single volume endame book but it could definitely stand some improvement.

GM Glenn Flear is just the sort of person to do this, and I'm eagerly awaiting news from people who buy it!

The following book has been anounced by everyman for august or september 2007:
I wonder if anyone (perhaps the author himself) has any information beyond the advertisement:
