I have been looking at this book more carefully, and I really think these Dangerous Weapons books are ideal for correspondence chess.  They introduce aggressive and slightly offbeat lines that reward some careful study.  Here's a recent win with one of their recommended lines:

1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Bg5 Bb4 6.e3 h6 7.Bh4 g5 8.Bg3 Ne4 9.Qb3 c5 Glenn Flear isn't fond of this move, giving 9...Bxc3, but I'm a bit of a sucker for c-pawn thrusts... 10.Bxb8 Rxb8 11.Bb5+ Kf8 12.Bd3 Bxc3+ This is the new move.  Paramos Dominguez - Rodriguez, Spanish Team Championship 1996 continued 12...Bf5 13.dxc5 Qa5 14.Bxe4 Bxe4 15.f3 Bg6 16.Nge2 Qxc5 17.Kf2 Re8 18.Nxd5 Bd2 19.Rac1!  Flear writes that White is doing well in these complications, "so this needs some refining for Black."  Nice invitation for the reader!  13.bxc3 c4 14.Qb4+ Nd6 15.Bc2 a5 16.Qc5 b5 This might be a little bold.  16...Be6 might be safer, but I wanted to win this game and went for the complications. 17.Qxd5  Maybe White should refuse this pawn and play 17.Ne2; White's poor development ultimately hinders his chances.  Maybe he can improve on the subsequent play, but I rather fancy my chances with the connected, passed pawns.  17...b4 18.Ne2 Rb5 19.Qf3 b3 20.axb3 cxb3 21.Bd3 Bb7 22.e4 b2 23.Rb1 a4 24.d5 Rb6 25.Nd4 Qe7 26.Ne6+ Kg8 27.Qe3 Nc8 28.Nc5 a3 29.Bc4 Nd6 30.Ba2 Bc8! I always like these little moves.  The queen wants to be on a7, so the bishop gets out of the way.  31.c4 Qa7 32.h4?! Surely not best, but I think Black's advantage is approaching winning already. 32...Rb4 33.hxg5 Rxc4 34.gxh6 Qa5+ 35.Kd1 Qxc5 36.Qg3+ Kf8 37.Bxc4 Nxc4  0-1

Perfectly reasonable try, I agree, just as you say not really a byway. (and also as you say inevitably not very exciting since it's not that kind of position) Wasn't a criticism.

Well, 8...Bg6 is just a bit of a pain for those not happy to gradually grind! Surely 9 d5 exd5 10 exd5 is, at least relatively, a reasonable try? It keeps pieces on and has been used by Radjabov.

5...Bf5 6 Ne5 e6 7 f3 Bb4 8 g4 is the main one. Also 7...c5 8 e4 cxd4 (8...Bg6 is covered but without anything particularly eciting or bywayish) 9 exf5 Bb4 10 Be3, if I've got the moves right. 10 Be3 in the main line of 7...c5, anyway.

I think they didn't count that as the QG, antillian.

I must say I think this book's excellent. It's true that it's basically a White repertoire book, but to present a coherent DW repertoire against the Slav and Semi-Slav, to say nothing of the QGD itself, is no easy feat and I think they've managed it brilliantly. There's even a couple of serious TNs revealed. 

And as a bonus you get a few Black DWs, at least one of which I can promise you is D - readers of the book will see why. Producing remotely sensible Black DWs in the QG Exchange variation is a feat which deserves recognition.

I can see why players on the Black side might be disappointed, but for what it is I think it's excellent.

I was rather surprised to see what I was brought up to consider the main line of the Botvinnik being described as a DW, but all is new that is well forgotten, as they say.

Have read the book and thought an excellent job was done all round.  I agree that the paper quality was not the best, however I have bought other recent Everyman titles and they haven't been printed on recycled material.

As for the possibility of black lines, well maybe if there are enough suitable ones then there will be scope for 'Dangerous Weapons: Queens Gambit 2 - Black strikes back!'

The only problem I have found to date is that Flear has missed what is IMHO a critical line in chapter one.

After 1 d4 d5 2 c4 dxc4 3 e3 Be6 4 Ne2 (!) is what I believe to be critical.  This line was made famous by the game Kiriakov-Baburin, Port Erin 2001, which continued 4...Bd7 5 Nec3! b5 6 Qf3 Na6 7 Nxb5!! (Baburin's annotation) with the idea 7..Bxb5 8 Bxc4! +-

In summary, the idea of threatening to land the Knight on f4 seems most awkward to me.

What are the people's opinions of this book?

Personally, I was really looking forward to it and would assume I would buy it as soon as it was available. When I first saw it at a bookstall I immediately picked it up and took a look inside. I was rather disappointed. I realise that the lines are supposed to be offbeat, but some suggestions looked very dubious, while on others the coverage was very skimpy where the lines became highly tactical.

Not only that, but Everyman seems to be publishing all of its books on recycled paper now. This is the 5th book in a row that I've seen like it. I'm all for saving the environment, but still.....

All in all, I have decided to pass on what I thought would be a dead certain buy.

I recall that in SOS 5, Stefan Loffler wrote a survey on the gambit 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Qc2 c5. I don't own the book, but a casual glance would suggest that White is better with best play.

Sorry, misunderstood.  There are some Black weapons in the whole 1.d4 d5 2.c4 complex -- one could also mention the Grau Gambit in the Baltic for example -- and I was interested whether you had any in your two Slav lines.   

But I do agree with Richard that there aren't really any in the main lines of the QGD proper, at least not that I can think of off the top of my head.  I too thought maybe the Cam. Springs, but I couldn't really come up with any. 

edit:  Although now that I think about it, there are some lines where Black gets to play Ba3.  Maybe one of those qualifies as a dangerous weapon?!
