So how exactly is he proposing to fight the stodge.

[quoteThe more interesting question is what does Davies recommend against the Danish that featured in volume 1.] [/quote]

I have received it yesterday and I just can say that I'm really deceived with this book. Not because the contents. The problem is that it seems to give a complete repertoire for black but this isn't accomplished. It's a book about the Schilleman, the Albin CG, an answer against 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 in the queen's pawn openings and some answers against the lines 1.c4, 1.Nf3 and 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 called 'fighting the stodge' (or something similar). Nothing about two knights defence, Danish or Scotch gambits. I can't judge the quality of the contents but I expected a wider look from the black pieces.

I do not have the book, I just look quicky at a glance in a store. It seems that in the last chapter, Davies gives variations against the English opening and Italian game and I am curious about this part.

"Davies sees nothing in the line 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.cxd4 Nc6 6.Nf3 but there for suggests the bright 6.Be3!?
Davies: Heading for uncharted territory. I don’t believe white gets anything via the standard 6.Nf3 due to the strength of  Capablanca’s defence,6…Bg4 7.Nc3 Bb4 8.Be2 Bxf3 9.Bxf3 Qc4.White hasn’t achieved anything with either 10.Qb3 or 10.Bxc6,which suggests an alternative approach is required. I don’t think white forces an advantage with 6.Be3 but it has the virtue of novelty. Black will at least be on his own resources. Karsten Müller and Martin Voigt give in there book Danish Dynamite only 6.Be3 deserve attention but we found only a few games, so further tests are required.
A  sensible way to decline the pawn is 3…d3 and after the rare 3…Ne7 we reach the Svenonius defence where  Davies follows the interesting suggestion from  Karsten Müller and Martin Voigt 4.cxd4 d5 5.Nc3!? dxe4 6.Bc4 Nf5 7.Nge2 with compensation for the pawn.

To TN, Probably 2...Qe7!? A true Gambiteer move, a move for some one who likes to take risks.

I think.

The more interesting question is what does Davies recommend against the Danish that featured in volume 1. Cheesy

Andrew Brett, what do you dislike about 4.d3 fxe4 5.dxe4 Nf6 6.0-0 Bc5? I agree that the task is not always easy for Black but it might be ok. Do you fear a precise sequence?

After 4.Nc3 my favourite is 4..fxe4 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Nxe5 dxe4 7.Nxc6 Qg5 where we have already discussed a lot (see the lines Markovich gives everywhere where Black has a pawn down in an ending, I agree with him that it might be the only possible route to an advantage, but even here, Black might have drawing chance with good play).

After 4.Nc3 I think Nf6 5.exf5 Bc5 6.0-0 0-0 7.Nxe5 Nd4 Black's best chance. But I do not claim equality after 8.Nf3 Nxb5 9.Nxb5 d5.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

If anyone has his ideas on anti 4 d3 and  4 Nc3 please post as I thought these lines were quite good for a prepared white player

The new book book by Nigel Davies on gambit lines for Black suggests the
Schliemann defence after e4. I believe that line is as follows: 1e4 e5 2Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 f5

My question is. What does he suggest agains the Scotch (to keep the gambit "dea")

Thanks
