Chess is better than BCM imho. To be fair, I've only seen BCMs from the late 90s, while i've seen Chess from the late 90s till today.

In comparison to BCM, Chess actually has some reasonably annotated games. BCM on the other hand, has extremely light annotations which are hardly useful (at least, that was how they looked to me from the few issues i have seen in the late 90s).

I also like that Chess has the occasional interesting opening article ( i still use Pert's 2. Bg5 v. the Dutch, and Dearing's fantastic article on "The Exchange Slav: Beating the Boredom").

The only thing that really annoys me about NIC Magazine, well two things really:

A) They don't have an index of the games they cover, which means that if you have been subscribing for awhile and wanted to find a particular game quickly its virtually impossible. I brought this to their attention years ago in one of their surveys to no avail.

B) An annual subscription is only 8 issues when it should be 12 issues like all other magazines, especially considering the amount of top level chess being played these days. Considering how expensive NIC Mag is, the least they could do is make it monthly.

Conclusion: If NIC now find themselves in trouble, then it's their own fault for bleeding consumers for years.

A) The games from 2000 up to today are available on-line. http://www.newinchess.com/Magazine/Default.aspx?PageID=123 I download the games and keep them in a special NiC mag database. Easy to search for particular games. (I also do this for NiC yb games.)

B) The number of issues is not that important to me. The total number of pages keeps me busy.

I was a NIC Magazine subscriber, but the emphasis seems to be on chess news and personalities. I'm a theory hound, and unless something is theoretically topical, I'm not too interested.  I mean, what do I care what movies Grishuk likes?

I admit, there are many games presented with good annotations.

Completely agree with last post re: Chess. Deeply offensive and wholly pathetic. BH Wood would be turning in his grave if he knew what had happened to his magazine.

Chessbase web site usually the same with the random female pics.

All sooo schoolboyesque.  Sad, sad, sad. Does such crass sexism really represent the chess world?

Forget 'Chess'; the content is thin, and preposterously, they manage to have a female on almost every cover...good for the, ahem, circulation.
Often times, their cover model is some arbitrary pubescent teen in a fetching pose...its all so sad and pathetic. Don't encourage this sort of thing by subscribing.

If German is no problem to you I have two further recommendations:

KARL (http://www.karlonline.org) a cultural chess magazin (4 times in the year)
Kaissiber (http://www.kaissiber.de) the special magazin from Stefen Bücker with a lot of opening discussion (outside of the main stream) and chess history

Regards, e2e4

I remember enjoying reading those old copies of some chess magazine in the National Library here. It has news, columns by Benko, Byrne, opening study by Susie polgar etc. Chess Life if im not wrong...... Huh Quite a fair bit of advertisements too I must say; books, equipment etc  Tongue

Ok, thx for your opinions.
NIC is fine, even better than before. It's just that I want something else.
My German is ok, my Russian and French could be improved  Wink

I have an abonnement to NIC yearbook and I am quite happy with it.
For a monthly magazine, I am now taking 64-Shakhmatnoe obrazenie and I find it very interesting because they have manu articles written by (or with the help of) Russian top players from now and the past.
I was many years a client by BCM and found it a nice lecture (better than Europe Echecs) but it is of course very oriented to the British chess actuality.
I find Europe Echecs very nice to read and I like its puzzles section (Faites-vous la main) but the content is (IMHO) a bit too light and some explanations about the opening theory are not really precise.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

I'm just curious.  Is NIC folding, or has it changed much recently?  I thought it was still one of the most important and stylish updates available.  It would be a real shame if its quality or worse, its very existence was slipping.

I would suppose that you as a Dutchie can read German to a considerable extent.  Have you considered Schach-Magazin 64 or Schach?

Chess monthly vs. BCM

After 10+ years of New in Chess magazine I'm looking for something new. Chess monthly and BCM look interesting. Could someone give his/her opinion on how they compare?
Or is there another english language magazine I'm missing?

(I'm from the Netherlands.)

Thx.
