Fans not watching?  I can only conclude that your experience with baseball was acquired in Seattle.

Come on. Where else do you have all kinds of stuff for kids to do during the game?

Where do they have that, Seattle?  The certainly don't in Cleveland.  I was in Houston recently on business, and I went to an Astros game.  There were plenty of kids there, and they were all watching the game.

That was boring.

Spain deservedly won. They combined decent defense with proper attack, the way they beat Russia twice and showed why Germany didnt deserve this spot. They got no chances at all and played even worse than the ref.

The game schedule screwed things up enormously and whoever made this schedule up should be shot. Both the quarters and semis were tighter for Spain.

Everybody knows that Lehmann has had some problems with wet balls.  However, they know this because Germany's been allowing teams to take good shots against him.  Casillas remains a question for me.  I just don't know how good he will be when faced with Podowlsky and Ballack and company, especially on set plays and especially on corners.

Casillas has been starting for Real Madrid since he was 18; he'll be fine.  Set pieces will be the only real concern, but then it will be a marking issue and not a Casillas one.  In open play, I suspect that Schweinsteiger is likely the most dangerous German, but as you point out, the Spanish defense isn't nearly as leaky as the German one.  Poor Lehmann has received little help from his back line...

I still prefer Spain, but this is the final that the fans deserve to have!  It should be brilliant, and I look forward to Spain winning in normal time!

My point of view:

a) The Spaniards have had a crisis already in the tournament - the penalty shootout against Italy. And they have kept their cool.
b) Spain is not an attacking team in the same way Portugal is, they look more patient and if the case arises don't mind playing a slow paced game with counterattacks.
c) The Germans are a tough opponent (like Italy) - they are notoriously cool and imagine the game goes to 70' and no team has scored yet: the psychological pressure rises and clear minds matter more than talent.
d) Much may depend on the weather. Of course, yesterday's heavy rain did not stop the Spanish team but it still may better suit Germany's style. On the other hand Lehmann does not look very stable and if it starts raining..

all in all: no betting for me!  Cool

Germany's backline has been atrocious throughout the tournament.  I thought Spain was positively clinical in dismantling the Russians.  They'll do the same thing to the Germans: make them chase the ball and then break them down.  The one concern for Spain should be set plays: their marking has been a little questionable on these throughout the tournament.  That said, the Germans have failed to impress.  Portugal made Germany look good...

Well, I have to kiss goodbye to my little wager on the Russians but there's no doubt in my mind that the Spaniards have been the best team in the tournament so I can't complain.

Of course, being the best team doesn't guarantee that they will beat the Germans - we English have long suffered at the hands of the Germans (on the football pitch, at least) and know all too well how difficult they are to beat in major tournaments.

My heart says Spain to win by two clear goals, but my head says Germany, probably on penalties - or a freak deflection or something.

True, Germany found it hard to take over the initiative and to put pressure on a solid defense. Thus the games against defensive playing teams like Croatia, Turkey and Austria did not impress.

Spain is an attacking team, which should suit Germany much better. The spanish style of play is indeed comparable to Portugal. Against Portugal a clever organised defence with two defensive midfielders and one forward destroyed the portugese game.

The same setup failed completely against Turkey, who defended very well after they lost the ball (which they rarely did). Germany surely needed a second forward in that match, but looking at the unstable and disorganized defence it was understandable that they didnīt change the strategy.

But against Spain the portugese strategy might work again, unless Torres, Xavi, Fabregas etc. can obtain the lead early in the game.

Germany will enjoy itīs position as an outsider. So far Spain did not have a crisis in the tournament. This might be a weakness if germany can score the first goal, but on the other hand it shows that the spanish team would surely deserve to win the final.

In what way? Portugal made terrible mistakes at the first two goals and the third one was possible due to a foul by Ballack. Germany was outplayed by Turkey and Croatia and had a hard time against Austria.

Unfortunately Germany will win. They are the typical "opponent". They always adjust to their opponent (not in tactics, but in playing level). When it really matters, they will either be slightly better or more effective than their opponent. If you look at the team itself, it is just a mediocre Bundesliga team, but their "Spielgeist" will put them through.

Germany was very impressive in their win against Portugal.  I really believe that Spain simply has too many weapons for Germany.  The key, as usual in a big game, will be the midfield play.

I look for Spain to start Fabregas, especially with Villa injured.  (It must be a serious injury if the manager has already said he's out for the final! I'm no doctor, but that sort of collapse in the middle of the field on a wet surface shouts ACL tear.)

Even without Villa, Spain has several great goal scorers.  Perhaps Torres will finally find the net a few times.  The ref will hopefully pay close attention to Lahm's defensive "technique".  I'm looking forward to a good game, but I can easily see Spain winning 3-1.

I don't get the joke - if I were a qualified coach I wouldn't hesitate a second if I had to chose between Barcelona, Chelsea or that great club from Enschede!  Wink
