What I do not understand is the opening choice from some super gm's,
for example ivanchuk in the tiebreak against nisipeanu he won his first game against nisipeanu,
in the 2nd game nisipeanu played 1.e4 and ivanchuk chose the najdorf, why did he not chose to play the ruy lopez? I just don't understand why someone plays the najdorf if he just needs a draw to enter the next round ... or shirov today against akobian ... shirov still made a draw ... but why does he play 1.e4 and let happen the sicilian, if he could have gone also for 1.d4 and just play some more drawish variation ...

As Ivanchuk lost playing the Najdorf, Shirov might have hoped that Akobian would do the same mistake Huh

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

The world cup has started this week-end.
Already some surprises in the first round:
Sutovsky, Short, Khalifman, Eljanov and Harikrishna were outed by "weaker" opponents.
