	The last four are now known: Carlsen, Kamsky, Karyakin and Shirov. Kamsky vs. Carlsen and Karyakin vs. Shirov

	Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

	@smylov_fan: There is a significant difference between Shirov and the players on your list. Shirov earned the right to challenge Kasparov, winning a match-cycle. The loser of the final match, Kramnik usurped his rights. The conditions of the final candidate match make this an even greater injustice: The loser (Kramnik) got price-money The winner (Shirov) got no price-money, but the right to play Kasparov for the WC-title.

Let's just name a few off the top of the head: Boris Gulko Akiba Rubinstein Paul Keres Paul Morphy (because he travelled all the way to Europe and the great champions, especially Staunton, refused to play him) Carl Schlechter Leonid Stein The list could easily be lengthened by adding all the great players who died during WWI and WWII. I don't count Fine as a victim because he chose to retire of his own accord. I'm sure there are plenty of other great players who suffered terrible injustices at least as great as Shirov. Anyway, I don't want to take anything away from Shirov. I just want to point out that in the contest of great victims, the slights against him are just that. Slight.

	Pono is out. Kamsky had a nice win because Pono chickened out of the PP Najdorf, while Shirov proved that you should not under any circumstances play the dragon against him, not even with white Oh and that little boy is also through.

	If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

	I always hope for Carlsen in those tournaments. My reasons: - He's Norwegian. - He's young. - I beat him when he was 2550 and drew him when he was 2680, so if you forget about our other games, that actually makes quite a good score against a possible future world champion! OK, I admit the first reason is the most important one. Anyway, this time it's even realistic to hope for a victory, so no doubt about my vote!

	Seeing how this World Cup has gone so far, you might as well flip a dice. My only prediction is to expect more of the unexpected.

	For me the three favourites are Shirov, Carlsen and Kamsky. Both Shirov and Kamsky performances are a pleasant surprise. A match Topalov-Shirov or a match Carlsen-Topalov will no doubt provide entertaining chess.
