Wow, great performance by Kamsky. I know he's not the most personable or popular elite GM, but his ability to contain his opponents' play was remarkable. Really great chess. I would have loved to see Shirov play Topalov, but now we have the great possibility of Dad Kamsky vs Danailov in a behind the scenes deathmatch. Why didn't this tournament generate more publicity/attention? The entire tournament room was empty during the final match. Chessbase followed the tournament, but ICC didn't have chess.fm commentators. Not sure about playchess.

Greetings,

Congratulations to Kamsky!

I confess that my reasons for being against his winning were based on events in the past.

However, despite his alleged lack of knowledge of today's critical lines, one must admire his handling of the middle-game and his (apparent) cool nerves under pressure.

Shirov, unfortunately, appears to have suffered from all attackers' Achilles' heels - a lack of patience, leading to frustration, when the opponent defends calmly.

One will remember Kasparov's fate against Kramnik!?

Also, we've been saying that Shirov had the edge in over-the-board games - Kamsky has proven this false.

It's possible that Topalov will find that the same applies to their future match!

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

To win a match, you must beat your opponent at least in one game. And Kamsky was unbeatable in this tournament.

Shirov's Defeat in the final against Kamsky is somewhat tragic.
Shirov played more energetic chess and always put pressure to his oppoent, but Kamsky defended well, still I think the win would have been more justified for Shirov, I think is by far more difficult to play aggressive than having just to defend ... but that's life ... all in all Shirov lacked the final precision ... but who wouldn't lack precision against kamsky ... so kamsky's win is also not that bad ....

So Kamsky drew in the fourth game and won the world cup.
He can prepare for his match against Topalov and he has a lot of work:
up to www.chessgames.com they plaid 8 times against each other in the past, Topalov won 4 games and the other 4 were all drawn!

Game 3 just drawn.  Kamsky is a draw away from victory.  Shirov needs a win with Black to send the match to tie-breaks.

Based on what Kamsky showed till now, I am quite pessimistic about Shirov's chances.

Greetings,

You're right, John.  Embarrassed

The attempt to trap the queen fails after 19 Nxe5, - I'd missed that, once White plays (after 19 ..., Ng7) 20 Nxg6+, fg; White's queen escapes with 21 Qd5/xc5.

A case of my not keeping the position in my head clearly enough - my ability to visualize tactics clearly has gone since not playing these past several years.  Embarrassed Cry

In which case, the other alternatives might have been better - ...,Be6 or ...,Nf4 for exchanges played at earlier moves.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

19 Nxe5? And if 19...Rg5 then 20 Qxh6

Disclaimer; I don't have a board so I've probably just lost a piece or two.

Greetings,

Still can't see anything after 18 h4?!, g4!

19 Qxe5, gf -+
19 Nh2, Ng7; 20 Nxg4, Nxg4 -+

Anything else?

Kindest regards,

Yes.  I only blasted through it this morning and didn't look carefully, but I thought Shirov's play was rather risky and dangerous for a time, then he looked very good, and then he went for too much (...Rgg2)...

Yeah now that I looked at it a bit more, I think you hit the nail on its head. 28..Rgg2 was wrong and 28..Ng4+ was good enough for at least a draw.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

"Quite a game, even if the opening looked like it was going to be very boring"

Heh. I recognized this opening fairly early as something that can produce tactical gems. A year or so ago my school's chess club paid for a lesson (only for the actual team, obviously) to get a lecture by IM Friedel. One of the games he analyzed was from this opening, or if not from this opening directly, it is by transposition. Knowing Friedel, it was rather obvious that it would become tactical mayhem just a few moves out of the opening.
Now I wish that I could find the game. It was from the US Chess Leagues, iirc. Burnett, maybe?

Edit: I found it. http://www.uschessleague.com/games/friedelburnett06.htm

Greetings,

Agree with you both.

I thought that Shirov might have tried a few things:

..., Be6 exchanging the bishops, perhaps opening the f-file;
..., Nf4; Nxf4, Qxf4 was another possibility and White's queen is still stuck;

But most of all, after 18 h4!?, why not 18 ..., g4 ?

19 Qxe5 - what else? as 20 ..., Ng7 is next - 18 ..., gf winning material.

Or am I completely missing something else?  Huh

I can't see the queen escaping with any other capture or move to a vacant square.

But then, I'm not a GM!  Lips Sealed

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

I think Shirov took a risk (perhaps because of Kamsky's lack of time, and perhaps because he couldn't resist) with 22...Qf6, when the safe 22...Qg4 was at least equal for black.
