It seems to be as though 2...c5 is the simplest equaliser, with the idea of 3.d5 b5, exploiting that the f1-bishop is commited to fianchetto. White can also play moves such as 3.c3 and 3.Nf3, but White cannot claim any advantage after either move.

Depend of what you are playing against closed openings. If you are a Grünfeld or KID player you can try 2..g6 3..Bg7 and you will play d5 at the right time, or d6.

Or you can play a super-solide Slave formation with d5, Bf5 or Bg4, c6, e6 etc.

Or you can transpose into a Catalan with 2..d5 and e6, etc.

Or you can play with a quick c5..

Everything is possible.

Hello,

I noticed recently that White can play 1.d4 Nf6 2.g3 as a move-order device to try and get the opponent into positions they are unfamiliar with.

What would you recommend against this rare option for Black? I think that 2...d6 and 2...c5 are probably Black's best moves, counterattacking on the dark squares (2...d6 intends ...e5).
