Tafl,

I hope you'll cover my pet idea, which is to delay c4 in order to arrange b3 and Ba3.  For example, 1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 f5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 d5 5.b3!? (White hurries the Bc1 to a3 before Black can play Bd6 and Qe7.)  5..c6 (if 5..Bd6 6.Ba3) 6.0-0 (not 6.Ba3 Bxa3 7.Nxa3 Qa5+ oops!) 6..Bd6 7.Ba3 Bxa3 8.Nxa3 Qe7 9.Qc1 0-0 10.c4 etc.

I currently prefer this idea to the main lines where White tries to play a4 to get in Ba3 and Black answers with ..a5, freezing the q-side pawns.  But I don't claim it as a refutation or even an improvement over the main lines.  The price for getting rid of the dark squared bishops is that in the position reached above White now has to untangle with Na3-c2-e1-d3, which is slow.  So Black has time to play g5-g4 and, if he can do it, obtain enough counterplay to hold the balance.

Best,
LeeRoth

Btw, does anyone know if the opening name Stonewall was inspired by Stonewall Jackson? He died from 'friendly fire' in 1863 (http://hometown.aol.com/gordonkwok/stonewall.html) and might have inspired the name of the opening - unless it's older than the 1860s?

So there is. Thank you.

I see by the way some stuff there on what you call the Markovic Defence ( 1 e4 c6 2 d4 Na6). Julian Hodgson played this line a lot round about 1982-1983, perhaps mainly in sub-database chess, but nonetheless in the UK at least he did most to 'popularise' it. I think de Bruycker played some English events around this time, so maybe that's where JH got it from.

There is actually an indication about the whenabouts in the comments at http://sverreschesscorner.blogspot.com/2007/04/dutch-stonewall.html

Indeed. Well, tafl, I shall contain my soul in patience, unless you know whenabouts this is likely to be out?!

That's correct. There may be a connection.

Tafl, I seem to remember reading on "Sverre's Chess Corner" (nice chess blog, btw) that Sverre Johnsen was writing something on the Stonewall?

Yes, Ivar Bern is correctly spelled. The Dutch Stonewall was his weapon against 1.d4 when he became world champion and he also used it on first board in the 15th ICCF Olympics which Norway now has a good chance to win.

My spies tell me that the Norwegian world correspondence champion, whose name I think is Ivar Bern (apologies for my ignorance if this is wrong) is writing a book on the Stonewall. I can't find any reference to this on the internet. Do any of our Norwegian posters (or any posters indeed) know whether this is true, and whether it is in Norwegian or English, etc?
