Williams makes a pretty good case in Play The Classical Dutch that 1.. f5 is fine vs. both 1.Nf3 and 1.c4. This is at least if you are willing to play the classical dutch. The Leningrad system is also a good setup if white makes no d4.

Im really looking forward to the stonewall book.

Hopefully it willl also cover how to play the stonewall against Nf3 and c4 (when d3 is generally thought troblesome) as well.

One recent game from the ongoing Arctic chess challenge(http://arcticchess.org/2008/) by Agdestein:

WIN WITH THE STONEWALL DUTCH
(Sverre Johnsen, Ivar Bern & Simen Agdestein)
208 pages (248 mm by 172 mm).
£14.99/$29.95/€23,45
Forthcoming.
February 2009

The Stonewall Dutch is a traditional favourite amongst club players, as it offers Black ready-made attacking plans on the kingside. As Grandmaster Bent Larsen has noted, the Dutch also has the tendency to 'bring out the coward' in opponents, giving it an added practical sting.

However, up until the late 1980s, the Stonewall wasn't fully trusted at grandmaster level, despite its earlier use by Alekhine and Botvinnik. Black's attacking plans were too one-sided, and White's methods too well worked out. The change came when a new generation of players, including Nigel Short and Simen Agdestein, showed that Black could handle his position in many other ways, including play on the queenside and in the centre, with the 'Stonewall' structure stifling White's attempts to generate play of his own. Agdestein in particular has continued to experiment with many new set-ups and move-orders for Black, and this book contains a wealth of new recommendations and suggestions based on this work.

The authors are all from Norway. Sverre Johnsen is an enthusiastic chess analyst, researcher, organizer and writer, and co-author of Win with the London System, one of the most popular openings books of recent years. Sverre Johnsen also wrote, with GM Leif Johannessen, The Ruy Lopez: a Guide for Black. Ivar Bern is a Correspondence World Champion and an International Master over-the-board. Grandmaster Simen Agdestein was for many years Norway's leading player, and also achieved fame for combining his chess activities with a career as a top-level professional footballer.

Hmmm. It has been a while since we have seen any publisher come out with a title that includes "Win with...." in the title. Is it just me or does such a title convey images of lack of objectivity and superficiality.  Undecided
Or perhaps it is just unhappy memories of so many other "Win with..." books.

Yes, the idea is to play ...c5 in one move rather than ...c6-c5 (which is Black's main idea behind the ...b6 development).

Have you considered the continuation 5.b3 Bd6 6.Ba3 Bxa3 7.Nxa3 Qe7 8.Qc1 0-0 9.0-0 b6!?, playing for ...c5 in one go?

Or even 5...b6!? 6.0-0 Bb7, when 7.c4 seems best.

Tafl,

Sorry to take so long to respond.  Yes, I would play c4 here.  The point of the move order, though, is that I've managed to get the dark squared bishops off first.

In the main line with 1.d4 f5 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 d5 5.Nf3 c6 6.0-0 Bd6 7.b3 Black can prevent the Bishop trade for a move by 7..Qe7.  White can insist with 8.a4 but I think this becomes a case where the cure is worse than the disease.  After 8..a5! 9.Ba3 Bxa3 10.Nxa3 0-0 White's q-side pawns are fixed.

My idea is to insist on the Bishop trade by hurrying the Bishop to a3 -- before Black can get in Bd6 and Qe7.  The downside, which I've noted, is that White ends up with an offsides Knight on a3 that has to be re-maneuvered.

If you're now saying that another downside is that this move order permits Black to avoid ..c6 and play a q-side fianchetto instead, then I confess that I did not consider that idea and will have to look into it.

@IMRichardPalliser:

Yes, I think a close inspection of 'Sverre's Chess Corner' will make it quite clear that this is indeed a Dutch repertoire book with the Modern Dutch Stonewall as the core variation. Just two quotes to support the claim:

"The Dutch defence (or rather counter-attack) is much easier to play if you can confidently meet 1.d4 with 1...e6, but that's only an option if you don't fear 2.e4. So one of the main goals of the book must be to show that 1.d4 f5 is a perfectly valid move-order."

"In particular I was eager to see Collins' ideas on the Stonewall versus 1.c4 and 1.Nf3. It would be a great selling point for a book on the Stonewall if it offered a complete answer to the Closed games. The subject hasn't received a lot of attention in sources that I have access to."

A clarification:

Tafl is an anonymous Norwegian poster on this forum and may or may not have close connections with Sverre Johnsen.

Btw, does anyone know if the opening name Stonewall was inspired by Stonewall Jackson? He died from 'friendly fire' in 1863 (http://hometown.aol.com/gordonkwok/stonewall.html) and might have inspired the name of the opening - unless it's older than the 1860s?

It seems more likely to me that they were (nick-)named for the same quality, i.e. solidly standing there, particularly considering that most of the early games I found where not played in the USA/CSA, but rather by Saint Amant (1830s and 40s).

Tafl,

I hope you'll cover my pet idea, which is to delay c4 in order to arrange b3 and Ba3.  For example, 1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 f5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 d5 5.b3!? (White hurries the Bc1 to a3 before Black can play Bd6 and Qe7.)  5..c6 (if 5..Bd6 6.Ba3) 6.0-0 (not 6.Ba3 Bxa3 7.Nxa3 Qa5+ oops!) 6..Bd6 7.Ba3 Bxa3 8.Nxa3 Qe7 9.Qc1 0-0 10.c4 etc.

I currently prefer this idea to the main lines where White tries to play a4 to get in Ba3 and Black answers with ..a5, freezing the q-side pawns.  But I don't claim it as a refutation or even an improvement over the main lines.  The price for getting rid of the dark squared bishops is that in the position reached above White now has to untangle with Na3-c2-e1-d3, which is slow.  So Black has time to play g5-g4 and, if he can do it, obtain enough counterplay to hold the balance.

Best,
LeeRoth

So there is. Thank you.

I see by the way some stuff there on what you call the Markovic Defence ( 1 e4 c6 2 d4 Na6). Julian Hodgson played this line a lot round about 1982-1983, perhaps mainly in sub-database chess, but nonetheless in the UK at least he did most to 'popularise' it. I think de Bruycker played some English events around this time, so maybe that's where JH got it from.

There is actually an indication about the whenabouts in the comments at http://sverreschesscorner.blogspot.com/2007/04/dutch-stonewall.html

Tafl, I seem to remember reading on "Sverre's Chess Corner" (nice chess blog, btw) that Sverre Johnsen was writing something on the Stonewall?

Yes, Ivar Bern is correctly spelled. The Dutch Stonewall was his weapon against 1.d4 when he became world champion and he also used it on first board in the 15th ICCF Olympics which Norway now has a good chance to win.

My spies tell me that the Norwegian world correspondence champion, whose name I think is Ivar Bern (apologies for my ignorance if this is wrong) is writing a book on the Stonewall. I can't find any reference to this on the internet. Do any of our Norwegian posters (or any posters indeed) know whether this is true, and whether it is in Norwegian or English, etc?
