I certainly agree. But  1..c5  or  1..e5  ?

Or should one attack it with the dutch ?

What move should black chose to counter the english opening  1.c4 ?

It would be interesting to hear what made your choice.

1. ...-f5 is also a good move, at least for someone used to play the dutch defense.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Probably the main reason I rarely play 1.c4 is 1...e5 with alumbrado's recommended pawn structure.

However, when I am faced with 1.c4, I usually play either 1...c6 or 1...Nf6.  I welcome my opponent's attempts to beat me in a strategic maneuvering battle.

Kramnik played a 1.Nf3 move order for most of his career, but would meet 1...c5 with 2.c4. In my opinion, this is a piece of evidence in favour of 1...e5. However, players such as Aronian and Carlsen have been happy recently to play against this as White, so I suppose it is really a matter of taste.

NB: I have played both 1...c5 and 1...e5 - personally I found 1...e5 to be easier to play/learn. It is probably a good choice for someone with experience in either colour of the Sicilian.

I've said elsewhere that I think it is important that White be made to pay a price for the fact that his move order rules out various Black defences to 1.d4.

If you play, say, the King's Indian or the QGD you may not be overly bothered by this, but personally I think it's still the best policy to go 1...e5!

I will generally follow up with 2...d6 and 3...f5 but have also been known to play the Reversed Dragon lines.
