Elaborating on Dink Heckler's post, perhaps it could be concluded that having a strong sense of smell is a disadvantage for chess players?

Suggest:

All titled players should be subject to random odour-testing throughout the year. Failure results in a one year ban and a spray from a hosepipe.

A couple of months back, titled player turns up for tournament smelling like ripe cheese. Sitting next to him was distinctly off-putting.  By the time I was paired with him a few days later, he'd been marinating further in the same clothes for a couple of days and smelled truly shocking.

Now maybe I live a sheltered life, but I imagine that, unless you work in a soup kitchen or some such, you just won't tend to experience this on a regular basis....unless you play chess. Incredible, isn't it?

If you are looking for some extreme examples of chess players in intimidating clothing, see the NIC Cafe section of the New In Chess Magazine 2003, Issue 7. Unfortunately the images are in black and white, but I think you'll get the picture.

Players dress up as medieval knights and arrive on horses (black and white naturally).

On this theme, do you think it would be a bit much for me to wear sun-glasses during the game. I know Benko did it once against Tal, but it surprises me more chess-players dont follow their poker brethren and don the dark glasses.

Frankly chess players on the whole are a sloppily attired bunch. Noted in a previous thread also at the body odour issues of certain players.

Remember a friend telling of an English GM who missed the flight to the great relief of peers as he hadnt washed for so long.

Uniforms are for teams. Chessplayers mostly compete as individuals.

There shouldnt need to be rules, but sadly many seemingly 'clever' people have no idea how to behave or dress. Mind you, same in any office I guess.
I remember the Calvia 04 prizegiving - the Japanese team on stage all wel besuited (we were top of the bottom - category E. yay!  Huh). A leading Russian super-Gm in crumpled too-big grey suit, plus dirty white trainers standing just in front. Oh, no. Please. An insult to sponsors not to dress properly for a prizegiving.

So - yeah, should be rules.

Or prizes could partly consist of:
Vouchers for clothing shops
Soap and shampoo.
A year's subscription to GQ.
And a good telling-off for their mums who should tell them about such things.

In many sports there are specific clothings or uniforms to wear. Mybe it is a rule or just a code of conduct. There is baseball uniform, even tennisplayer have a specific style of clothing.

I sometimes wondering in chess......

What is aloud to wear? What if a man goes in shorts an T-shirt to the tournament? Is this tolerated or even normal or rude?

What about females? What if a women goes with a bellyfree shirt?

I am wondering if in the chessworld is a certain dress code or does it depends to the tournament? The topplayer seems to wear suites all the time. But in amateur tournament I am somtimes a bit surprised.
