Hello All:

I have read a lot about Chess for Zebras being a book that could really improve your game. Chevalier has said so above also.

Rather than reading reviews that says this book will improve your game I am looking for evidence of this. Have you read the book and do you think this book was THE one that made a big difference?

Thanks,

Gerry

Hello All:

Which of these two is best to start with for an 1800-1900 player.

Thanks in advance,

Gerry

I've looked at both and don't really rate them as instructional books. I really enjoyed reading Rowson's thoughts. Rowson's best effort remains the Grunfeld.

Please explain why you think the book is not overly instructional in your opinion. Of all the chapters, I think the first part is extremely useful, and imo, perhaps only Chapter 7 on the four dimensions of chess could be considered superfluous.

From some of what I read, it looks like Chess for Zebras is a more concise, watered down version of Seven Deadly Chess Sins. Given that I have 7DCS, I'm not sure it's worth to get Chess for Zebras (if it's redundant). How do these two works compare?

Thanks in advance!

I own both books, and can say that Chess For Zebras is anything but redundant. Almost the entire book covers aspects not covered (or at least not in detail) in 7DCS, and if the same point is mentioned, Rowson covers it in much more detail in Chess for Zebras.

My advice: Buy Chess for Zebras as well - it certainly improved my practical play significantly.

Nothing has meaning or value other than the meaning and value that you give it.
