I am not sure Shirov improved(it needs thorough analysis and I do not have the time to do it) the line given in the book( being a great player , it is not suprising at all that it does), he made use of an interesting idea( and the ideas are free and do not belong to anybody, of course) mentioned there( I would be glad if he had read the book, but most probably not).We are talking about the game Nisipeanu - Shirov(played less than 10 days ago), 17.06.2008.It is a mystery( at least to me) why Mr.Petrov mentions Shirov's DVD( I have not seen it, but I am sure it is of high quality), because I do not see any connection with the topic discussed.It would be a good idea that Mr.Petrov( a chess arbiter)starts talking about things he really understands.

Yes indeed, the Idea of a4 in the mentioned shirov game is given in the book the easiest sicilian, although Be6 was included, nevertheless an impressive book and an unfortunate lost for shirov , as he was clearly better

Just what is the verdict on the Novosibirsk variation of the Sveshnikov Sicilian ( 1 e4 c5  2 Nf3 Nc6  3 d4 cxd4  4 Nxd4 Nf6  5 Nc3 e5  6 Ndb5 d6  7 Bg5 a6  8 Na3 b5  9 Bxf6 gxf6  10 Nd5 Bg7)?

Radjabov is the leading Sveshnikov expert and plays it exclusively (instead of 10..f5).  Carlsen also played it after ditching 10..f5.  Also, Kasparov used it in his last two Sveshnikovs after changing from 10..f5.  Kramnik however, having been such an adherent hasn't played it since 2001, instead using 10..f5.  Also, other top players all use 10..f5.  The Easiest Sicilian doesn't paint an althogether promising picture in one line (11 Bd3 Ne7  12 Nxe7 Qxe7  13 c3 f5  14 Nc2).  However, this doesn't/didn't stop the above luminaries playing the black side.  Plus, Anand who had such troubles getting an opening advantage versus Radjabov in Mainz 2006 didn't try this line.   

In his DVD Shirov states he has been looking at the Novosibirsk recently (even struggling to remember theory for the 10..f5 line!) and mentioned we shouldn't be surprised if he plays it in the future(as an aside his novelty against Nisepeanu was fabulous, improving on the line given in the Easiest Sicilian - Bh3 Be6 added in makes all the difference!).  Finally, Nedev wanted to write a book on the line so it can't be all that bad.

There seem to be two separate camps - those who are willing to play it and those who aren't....but those who are willing don't seem to be getting there fingers burned.

So, is the line good or are there any holes....perhaps holes which can be pointed out in a future update.
