The new search booster is good, the searches are incredibly fast and the reference tab is now almost instantaneous on my computer, no waiting any more! Smiley
The online search is very fast, too.
The new 'fast-and-easy preparation' is not so impressive though.

For engine users you can now make the default kibitzer a non-cb engine so you can pick a uci engine for this now.

It would be enough if I could just make Fritz my default kibitzer.  It used to be, but one of the updates wiped it out, and there doesn't seem to be any way to put it back.  Sad

Sure there is, just do a search on your hard drive for the Fritz.eng file or .eng files, choose the appropritate ones and put it or them back in the engine folder. That should do the trick.

One good thing about ChessBase is that (unlike other programs) it doesn't install over previous versions, so I still have my CB7 and CB9 installations ... just in case!!
One time, while I was playing the British Championship many years ago, my ChessBase refused to continue until I put the CD in the drive. Unfortunately I had left my CD far away, on the other side of the Channel!  Angry

I think I'll just wait until Chessbase's version number catches up to MCO's.  What good is Chessbase 10 anyway, when MCO is already up to 15????

ChessBase 10 just arrived in the post (thanks ChessBase!!) and offhand looks very similar to CB9, a bit prettier. I haven't noticed much in the way of changes so far, just two extra buttons on the main page (Search, and New Games) and an extra info window on the already very useful reference tab.
I will give it a thorough trial over the coming weeks and see whether it helps me finish my DW - Flank book!!! Roll Eyes

With CA you get a database of similar quality (although CB annotations are better), which updates via the internet - something i get the impression CB10 will replicate.

BTW You can also use megabase in CA, which can convert the CB files to CA or just use in CB format as read only

Question on the search speed for CB 10. How much faster is it, and how does it compare to Chess Assistant? I have CB 8 and CA9. I switched to Chess Assistant due to searches being much faster (even with the search booster in CB).

Speed is also the key for me - along with database availability. I get the impression that the fancy bells and lights that come with each upgrade do nothing to help search speeds. But Mega is a good database - has CA got anything comparable?

I have to say, Harvey, I'm not convinced!

I also notice that the 'Silver' edition of Chess Assistant 9.1 is a fair bit cheaper to purchase (via download) than it would cost me to upgrade from chessbase 9 to 10.

In short, I feel it's a bit of a rip off at the price they are asking.

I have a pre-release copy of CB10. The most useful feature I have found is being able to search the huge online database. It searches it quickly and works really well.

There is also a nice feature for preparing openings against a player that is in the database.

For engine users you can now make the default kibitzer a non-cb engine so you can pick a uci engine for this now.

Then borrow it when one of your friends buys it, install it on your computer and return it.  Smiley

I see the full 'spec list' is up on the chessbase.com site.

Can't say I see anything which makes me want to go out and spend 70 pounds on an expensive upgrade from 9....

My fear is bugs.

I can't see anything new that would interest me, but I'd be interested in reviews.

Anyone have this yet?  I'm wondering whether there are any new features that make an upgrade worthwhile.  I was hoping they would spruce up the repertoire and game annotation features, but this doesn't seem to have happened.  According to New in Chess, the new features consist of:

- new integrated online database with millions of games, kept topical and up-to-date by ChessBase;
- split-second online search results (DSL);
- automatic update of your local reference database (Big or Mega) with the weekly instalments of games;
- display of games and moves with statistics in tree style;
- optional restriction to quality games in all searches;
- openings references include an overview of common variations;
- new search booster for super-fast results;
- openings books with instantaneous display of replies;
- fast-and-easy preparation for any specific players, with tree display and games;
- player dossier with improved openings references;
- direct access to the ICCF server for correspondence chess games;
- new engine functions, e.g. display of discarded lines;
- new functions for the chess server: e.g. online database accessible for kibitzers, ECO codes in the games lists, tactics training, full Chess 960 support.
In addition: new look with high-resolution pieces, improved window management.
