In the classical, after 6...Na6 is 7Bf4 maybe a problem? Don't think there is much to worry about in the exchange variation, but seems very popular on ICC for some reason.

My impression is that 7. Bf4 is indeed a problem (in the sense of being a major possibility for White, not in the sense of not being playable for Black).

anyway, so the KID is fine?

I dont know - perhaps Radjabov does or Kasparov

what about 5.h3, i hate that system, any recomendations?

A pawn move on the edge of the board should not worry you - it weakens the kingside and if White follows with g4 blacks f5 is still playable

Just insert a game I played as Black 1999 - of course comp analyses may show Blacks play was not fully correct - but dont forget the impact of moves on board with the clock ticking  Wink

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.h3 O-O 6.Nf3 Na6 7.Bg5 Qe8 8.Be2 e5 9.d5 Nh5 10.g3 f5 11.Nd2 Nf6 12.g4 Nc5 13.f3 c6 14.Qc2 cxd5 15.cxd5 Bd7 16.Nc4 Qe7 17.b4 Na6 18.Qb3 Rac8 19.a4 Kh8 20.Be3 fxe4 21.fxe4 b6 22.Nxd6 Qxd6 23.Bxa6 Rxc3 24.Qxc3 Nxe4 25.Qc4 Ng3 26.Rg1 Rf3 27.Bf2 e4 28.Bd4 Qf4 29.Bxg7+ Kxg7 30.Qd4+ Kg8 31.Kd1 b5 32.Kc2 Rd3 33.Qc5 Qd2+ 34.Kb1 Rb3#

also 4.Bf4? what is best after this?

Playing for e5 or c5 with Black - you cant always get a mating attack

i tried transposing into a benoni but after dxc5!? i lost badly!

Hopefully you learned something and improve your play in this line

can anyone tell me which lines are supposedly causing problems so that i can work out an adequate system.

This is a job for life  Wink You will never be able to work out adequate systems against all the critical lines in the KI - going for the KI means you have the "KI-heart" (its similar like the Dragon) and you like those pawn chains and giving up your whole queenside for an attack - you dont know if its winning or enough to draw, but you believe - KI is something to believe in or not - if you dont, choose a different opening.

I have been a KID player ever since i saw some of the beauties that this opening produces yet lately i hear that the KID is in trouble and has not been played much recently??!?!?!?!?
what a travesty this is for chess!!
if so, can anyone tell me which lines are supposedly causing problems so that i can work out an adequate system.

NB. i have been playing semi-slav recently so have not followed many of the theoretical developments

The decline in popularity of the KID is IMHO not due to fear of any particular line, although I guess that for many players the amount of theory that the Classical has accumulated is a bit off-putting. I wrote in an earlier post:

"It seems that there is a definite trend among professional players to mistrust all or nearly all the black defences that concede space. This is a shame, since the imbalance created in say the Pirc or King's Indian has produced many great fighting games over the years. I hope it's just a phase. The thought of more and more people playing the Slav and the Petroff is very depressing!"

IMHO this trend can be safely ignored at sub-elite level, where playing for a win with Black is often necessary to make a high score, and where having counterplay in a strategically rich position is far more important than whether the position is objectively +=, = or =+.

Although there is a huge amount of theory in the Classical KID for Black to study if he plays 6...e5 7.0-0 Nc6, there are good alternatives for Black which significantly cut down his workload. For example, you can play 6...Na6!? and meet 7.0-0 or 7.Be3 with 7...e5, transposing to the 7.0-0 Na6 variation, but dodging the Exchange Variation and Petrosian Variation. And in the Gligoric, White usually meets 6...e5 7.Be3 Na6 with 8.0-0, transposing to the 7.0-0 main line. Therefore, most of your study time can be spent on learning to play against 6.Be2 Na6 7.0-0 e5 8.Be3, which you will get in most of your games, rather than on the over-theoretical 6...e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5.
