After 4...a6 I would hope for 5.Nc3 b5 6.c5 g6!? which I like for black.
But white has other moves earlier which I still have to check, e.g. 5.Qc2 or 5.Bd3 Bg4 6.Qb3.

After 4...a6 5.Bd3 Bg4 6.Qb3 is a testing line. Instead of unclear line with 6...BxN, maybe 6...Qc7 is playable. Black also has option transposing to QGA type positions after 5...pxp.
             Personally don't trust 4...a6 for same reasons gave at start of thread.

Agreed: 4...Bg4
For ...Bg4, I remember seeing a Fabio Caruana game recently. A quick hack as black.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Suggesting one move by a book is not a breach of copyright, although posting the entire index of variations with that chapter could be.

Btw, 4...Bg4 is looking like a very solid option for Black at the moment, particularly the 5.h3 Bf3 6.Qf3 e6 variation. The most White can hope for in this line is a miniscule edge.
  
What does author X say about this move? Why doesn't author Y mention that move?

Out of those two? Definitely 4...Bg4 (or as you mentioned 4...Bf5), after the bishop developments white can only ever try to aspire to the smallest of edges and I don't really think he gets them. 4...a6 on the other hand either takes you back to a 4...a6 main line (i.e. usually reached via 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 a6 5.e3) if white plays 4.Nc3, but as you already mentioned white has all sorts of alternatives, which also are vaguely promising (involving either Bd3 and/or Nbd2) and avoid having a "vulnerable" knight on c3.

Hi,
as a semi-slav player with black (Meran,Moscow,...) Im not sure about what to play after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3. Most common is 4...Bf5, but I actually do not like the positions after 5.Nc3 e6 6.Nh4 Bg6 and so on. Black has to play very precise here, otherwise white has a long lasting advantage due to his pair of bishops. 4...g6 is of course an option too, but Im not familiar with this setup. 4...Bg4 looks intersting to me as black has clear plans in this variation. I do not know much about 4...a6 here. White hasnt played Nc3 so far, so b7-b5 is less effective but a6 is still a good preparation move for Bg4 because Qb3 is not dangerous after Bg4 if a6 was played before. So the main question is if white has anything better than 5.Nc3 after 4...a6.

Any opinions about 4...Bg4 and 4...a6 ?
