I'll take a wild guess that this thread stems from Larry Kaufman's idea that "second-best is often the way to go."

Good guess, but no. I noticed that there hadn't been any action on the KID thread for over a week. Therefore, I thought that I would start a poll as to which is the best line against the KID. However, given that most people would say "The Classical Variation", I decided a poll regarding the best line after the Classical would be more interesting!

I personally think that the Makogonov system is the second-best in practical terms, but that the 6.Nge2 Samisch and Fianchetto Variation are objectively both equally strong alternatives to the Classical and to each other. But that's just my opinion.

My, according to your logic I should open 1.f3 and 2.g4 ....

At your level, you would probably win many games that way.

I could not resist that line which was, of course, in jest.

Lev should try it on ICC.  He could post his "courageous" wins here.  I can see it now: WHAT DO YOU CALL THE DIRTY ROTTEN COWARDS WHO REFUSE TO EXPOSE THEMSELVES TO IMMEDIATE MATE?

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

The problem is that not everyone is a second-rate player.  I, for example, am only a fifth-rate.

I don't care which is the second best; I'm trying to figure out which is the fifth best.  I always play the fifth best.  Anyone care to help me figure out what it is?

As I play the Sämisch with Be3, I'd say the other Sämisch  Smiley

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Hello KID players (as both White and Black):

Which system do you believe is the second strongest against the King's Indian after the Classical variation?
