Liverpool has now beaten both Man United and Chelsea without having to play Torres!

The English press seems to be a bit happier now that we've defeated a fairly good team in Minsk.

The Dutch, Spanish and English are the only teams with perfect records so far in Europe.  The Dutch and Spanish are no surprise after their excellent performances in Euro 2008, but the English have been a very pleasant surprise.

If Capello has the courage to sit one of England's most popular players in Michael Owen and the ability to get his team to score 8 goals in two matches anyway, perhaps the press will start to let him get on with the job.

We now have a break in international qualifying until February(?).  This should help England as much as any other team.  We'll see you in South Africa, MNb!

I'm not English, but I saw the game.

Ashley Cole virtually gave Kazakhstan the goal, and so some very poor fans booed him every time he touched the ball after that.

The English press complained that Kazakhstan had a couple of half chances and complained that England couldn't do much more than string a few passes together.  Emile Heskey missed several golden opportunities, and the press really wants to become the next coach of England.  That would mean they would break up the partnership of Gerrard and Lampard.

Regarding Gerrard and Lampard, these two world class players played pretty well together at Wembley, but not well enough to please the English press.

I think England needs to win the group outright, but even then the press won't stop attacking the squad until we win in 2010.  I get the feeling that anything less than World Cup Champions will be seen as proof that the press would make a better coach than anyone hired by the FA.

PS: David Beckham did prove that he can still play world class football... for about ten minutes.

Thank you. When it comes to football you are English. So English press is that vicious indeed. In such a situation Dutch press restricts itself to some mumblegrumble as it wants to be taken seriously by its readers.

Man United can still turn it around to have a good season.
After that awful start, they've played decent football as of late and should take West Brom.  And besides, if Berbatov comes alive...who knows.  However, I wouldn't bet money on it...that's just what I want to see it happen. Wink
If I was betting money...probably Chelsea.  But don't tell anyone.

Can any Englishman explain why the English team got hissed after a 5-1 win? I thought Dutch and Brazilian fans were hard to satisfy, but this is something I've never heard of before.

Apparently (and I work for the newspapers so my information comes directly from the sports reporters) the hissing was aimed at one player in particular because of his role in making it not a 5-0 win, against a team England expected to beat without conceding a goal.

Should be brought in - initially only to see if the ball has crossed the goal line or not - later other stuff can be phased in.

Another idea is to let the video referee decide if it's off-side or not - and only in case of a quick goal. This will make the off-side trap much more riskier. This will also lessen the amount of breaks.

Shouldnt delay game too much, whats worse is players feigning injury - lost all respect for the Italians of the Milan team one year seeing them playing out the game falling over one after the other. If you cant win with a bit of respect for the game itself then theres no point.

I think in Rugby they only use a video referee to decide if a try should be awarded (because it's very often impossible to tell without it).

If you want to bring it in to football you have to decide when to use it - to determine whether a goal should be allowed? a penalty should be awarded? whether a foul is a red card? etc. it certainly shouldn't be for too many things or the game would be stopping and starting too much

Football needs that as well indeed. The second arbiter should not run across the field, but sit in a nice quiet room watching TV.

Sounds good in theory, but what will you get when you have two morons iso one refereeing?

In rugby they have video replays so the extra arbiter can look at key decisions many times before giving his advice - mostly it works almost perfectly. Smiley

Almost every serious sport has (even chess Wink). The way it works in ice hockey or Yankee football is also quite good, where you can request a replay on tv.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

I watched City against Portsmouth last week, and again against Wigan yesterday on French TV, what a difference! Shocked

Chelsea have been the most impressive so far and are, in my opinion and most pundits, strong favourites for the title. The only team who are likely to contest it are Man United.
Ronaldo coming back for Man United soon -apparently will be a sub against Chelsea on sunday, can't wait for that game! and John Terry's red card against Man City from last weekend has been recinded so he'll play as well.
