That's a nice one Belgium.
In the meantime I think that Kramnik has somehow missed the win in timetrouble and the best he can hope for is a drawn rook endgame with a pluspawn.
This is really bad luck for Kramnik who had played excellent chess and really got Anand cornered this time.

Looks like, in time trouble, Anand and Kramnik both missed 35.Bxf5! drawing...

If Playchess.com's clocks are correct, Anand is also far behind on time. Bad omens hovering in the air...

Edit: On move 30Qf3 now. Incredibly complex game with not a lot of time to think for both sides.

Nope, again Kramnik found the best move 19....a5!
When the possible skewer Ba6 is really anoying for white, in several variations. Black is bound to win some tempi with a move like Rfc8 or Rac8. Further the pawn e5 now looks like a possible target for black.
Unless there is some Anand magic in this position I predict Kramniks first win.

I'd laugh myself silly if it continued 19... gxf4 20. Qxb4 Qxg2 mate, but sadly I don't think it's going to happen.

I think Kramnik might win this game.
His answer to 17.e5 with 17...c5 freeing his bishop on b7 was excellent.
Frankly I dont see how Anand is going to equalize here, and he may have a long and tedious defence ahead of him, in an inferior near endgame.

I'd have thought that Kramnik would still try to win and play what he considers the est opening ,after all a Kramnik win might suddenly make Anand nervous in the last few games, the reward of winning a game in a World Championship match would far outweigh any advantage form keepinghis Catalan prepartion secret - especialy astheory is constantly changing.

Another one is that Kramnik didn't want to waste his opening preparation on a lost cause.

Not that the Catalan particularly lends itself to decisive TNs but still it's possible that he wanted to keep his powder dry for some future challenge - either against Anand or somebody else.

What do you folks think is the significance of Kramnik having the chance to play a Catalan today and not going for it?

Well, there are a lot of possible reasons... here are a few I think are plausible:

1.) Kramnik feared Anand's opening preparation and 'took him at his word' so to speak.
2.) Kramnik had never intended to play the Catalan before the match and therefore did no work on it.
3.) Kramnik did not think it would provide good winning chances (I find this hard to believe).
4.) Kramnik has already lost the World Championship and he doesn't want Anand to show the world the Catalan is only good enough for equality, thereby losing two of his most precious possessions  Smiley

I was surprised he did not play it. The Catalan fits Kramnik perfectly.

Uncharacteristically he let slip a slight advantage today. Frankly I would not be surprised with two more draws.

I remember it was said that, statistically speaking, Lasker was the greatest 50 year-old chess player of all-time (at least until Korchnoi came along).  And he was also the greatest 60 year-old as well.  His level of play was certainly world-class for several decades.

As a side note, I heard Kasparov speak glowingly about Lasker's amazing return to competitive chess in his later years.  He was very impressed by his level of play and praised this comeback in effulgent terms.
I sincerely hope Garry follows that example.  I'd love to see some more games...and I think its safe to say that Kasparov would be the greatest 50-year old if he so chooses.

To get somewhat back on topic... Roll Eyes... I think Kramnik will win at least one game, but will still lose the match.
