Credit to Kramnik though, but it looks like its all a bit late...

Does it make you long for the good old days of 24 games matches too? Twelve games is way too short to satisfy my lust for sensation.

I echo your sentiments. I would prefer a best of 24, even though I am too young ever to have seen such a match live.  Embarrassed

6 wins or maybe 4 would be better imo and no interference by Fide prezzes.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

If miraculously Kramnik makes it to the tiebreak games, then he'll be the huge favorite to win despite Anand's blitz prowess. Vlad would have a heck of alot of momentum going in.

In the next game Anand is white,
he should draw effortlessly.
He should just play 1. e4 ...

Congrats to Kramnik who won his first game! A miracle is now possible, if Kramnik wins the remaining two games of the match there will be a tiebreak! I predict these games will be exceptionally hard and close, so Anand has to watch out now!

Well...ehem, whatever I was saying earlier about Anands resistance forget it - this was pretty awful. Reminds me of a comment Kasparov said about Anand, that occasionally he will play some awful stuff but then has the ability to dismiss it and continue playing as normal.

Credit to Kramnik though, but it looks like its all a bit late...

Smyslov_Fan turned out to be correct!  Wink

I thought Anand had a draw opportunity earlier with 22... Nc4 but I overlooked 24. Rxe2 (rather than Qxe2) in that line. So where was the decisive mistake?

Kramnik seems to be doing very well on the clock today for once. And he has a very promising position. Anand is in trouble me thinks.

Going for the endgame without queens seemed reasonable at the time, although in retrospect playing for attack with Queens seems the way to go.
I think Anand is providing stronger defensive resistance than Kramnik did.

I doubt it. Kramnik has twice led slip away an advantage, which is uncharacteristically. I predict another draw.

This was the sort of game I expected to see from both sides.  Finally, Kramnik is playing well now that there's no pressure to succeed.  Maybe he will indeed win one game before the end.

What happens on Re1 instead of Rd7?

37.-a4! looks indeed good for Black and is likely the last chance to play for a win...

In the game 38. Rd7 is likely the best move, as White draws after 38.-a4 39.Ra1! axb3 40.Bxb3 Rxb3 41.Rxc7.

Kramnik in time trouble missed the winning moves Bc7 and Rg8 and played the lemon Qc7 cause he clearly has his mind set on trading queens.

Would have been interesting to see a4 played immediately instead of Re8. Also What happens on Re1 instead of Rd7?

Both played poor moves in time trouble.

Anand missed two other "easy" draws. Both 39.Ra1 and 40.Rd1 look like draws as White gets to double the rooks on the 7th, e.g.  40.Rd1 b2 41.Kg2 Rc1 42.Rdd7. Of course, none of this is easy with the ticking clock...

However, even now 41... Rc2 42. Rxc2 bxc2 43. Bxe6 Rb1+ 44. Kg2 c1=Q 45. Rxc1 Rxc1 46. Bxf5 looks safe enough for White.

Edit: It looks like White can also play 43.Bf1 Rb1 44.Rxc2 Rxf1+ 45.Kg2 Ra1 46.Rc6 but there is a nasty surprise: 43.Bf1? Rb2!!-+
