Vishy won as predicted !

Why- Brilliant opening prep but more significantly Kramnik's avoidance of wild tactical play has seriously weakened his strength. Vishy did well though to get the field of play on to this terrain- you saw what happened when Kramnik had a nice slight edge in that excellent Kasparov Nimzo.

I think Topalov v Anand could be a barnstorming match- no doubt Top would take on either the najdorf or semi-slav in the sharpest lines ( assuming Vishy let him get them !). Naturally, Topalov has to overcome Kamsky which won't be as easy as some might think

If you go to Mig's site., GK gives a pretty good analysis of the match.

First of all,

Congratulations to Vishy Anand for finally becoming the World Champion!

FIDE's rules and titles have been the bane of chess since the Kasparov-Short match.  Kramnik's legacy will undoubtedly include unifying the title and facing his very toughest opponents.

Vishy Anand has consistently been one of the top three players in the world for about 15 years now, and fully deserves to be the World Champion.  Having said that, I'm reminded of Tal's comment upon becoming world champion, "the elections are too soon".

Kamsky, or more likely, Topalov, will play the best player in the world in another match.  Anand has plenty of stamina and should be able to defend his title safely (not easily, safely).

Kramnik reminded us of the fight that made him a world champion and Anand stood up to him and won convincingly.  The draw was one of courtesy and respect, and marked the symbolic handing over of the title.  This is not the first time such a draw has occurred in a world championship match, and didn't surprise me at all.  I didn't see the game analysis live, but Kramnik offered the draw from an inferior position and knowing that he had lost the title.

The last game of the match should not be played.  This last game has absolutely no sporting significance, and even if Kramnik wins the last game, Anand will have won the match by the convincing +2 score that only one person predicted!  I predict a fairly painless Queen's Gambit draw.  We'll see soon enough.

I believe the consensus is that Anand is clearly better and that Kramnik would have to suffer to reach a draw if the game goes on.

Guess this will be shared by the majority of chess players, as this is his first match title. Convincingly done at a 6½:4½ result!

Hello:

Saw a paraphrasing of the conference on Dennis M's site. Glad to see that Kramnik was gracious in defeat. Think both have conducted themselves very well. Nice to see after the no-handshaking shenanigans, etc. involving other pairings in the last few years.

I like Kramnik, but I did not like his decision to offer a draw in that position.  But, regardless, congratulations to Anand.  In my opinion, he is now the 15th World Champion.

Bravo to Anand, actually bravo to both players!  Smiley

Does anyone else thinks it's a bit silly that Anand in essence has to contest for the same title 3 times? (i.e. in fast succession Mexico, this match and the match against the winner of Topalov-Kamsky)

To really defeat hegemony you have to keep taking shots at it long after empathy would warrant otherwise as it shall not pass quietly into the still of the night.

I suspect there are still some un-nameablebodypartniks that will continue their denials on the matter, for their own reasons that I cannot fathom.

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

A Topalov-Anand match would be a cracker.... I´d put Anand slight favourite but if Topalov avoids his blunders he could definitely win.

Well at least there is no doubt anymore who is the world champion now.
(classic chess or no classic chess).
And frankly I dont see either Kamsky or Topalov defeat Anand.
Anand showed no weaknesses except in game 10,
and had excellent preparation.

12...exf5!?! looks anti-positional to me, but Kramnik may have a specific mess in mind...

Interesting - I suppose Anands logic is that if Kramnik is going to go for a sharp line he normally doesn´t play, at least with 1.e4 he will be on his normal home territory.
