Truth is also there was no reason to let Topalov not play in the last WCh tournament won by Anand. The logic is anything but straightforward, but I see Topalov playing that match against Kamsky as a compensation for leaving him out of that tournament.
Not that I pity Topalov, I find him antipathetic.

Truth is there is no case for Topalov to have this match at all. Is this as contraversial a decisions as when Kramnik was parachuted in to face GK when he had lost to Shirov ?

Topalov v Anand would be a great match but I give Kamsky a 40 % chance of winning against Topalov - maybe higher if he gets through the openings.

One world champion is so much easier to explain to any interested non-chess players !

We still have to explain the logic how Anand's next opponent qualified for the WC match.... Tongue

I agree Cyronix. It's great to have one champion even if I was hoping it would have been Kramnik. One world champion is so much easier to explain to any interested non-chess players ! I hope Kramnik can achieve the motivation to fight for another match. Is the Kamsky-Topalov match still up in the air ?

Silently and unnoticed the chess world got united,
noone talks about it, but we finally have one champion.
Everyone spoke of Anand as titleholder, but Kramnik was still undefeated in matches, so Anand could not really crown himself as a real world champion. Now finally we have one chess organisation, one title. Some may question this system of the chess organisation, but this system is still better than the "chaos" that existed before. Now one can expect that someone like shirov who qualified as challenger of the wch will also get his match!

Let's see,

Kasparov agrees to end the match with Karpov in 1984-85, then angrily storms the stage to protest...

Kasparov loses to a computer in a match, then angrily complains the computer team of cheating

Kasparov lets go of a piece, making a move that would have made him the first sitting champion to lose to a woman, then complains vociferously that he did no such thing.  The arbiters side with him despite clear video evidence to the contrary

Kasparov loses his title in match play and openly considers retiring

Eight years later, Kasparov derides the World Champion who soundly defeated him as soon as he loses a match.

I'm not too worried about Kasparov's comments regarding Kramnik.

Always nice, such a list of facts.  Cool It's just that the man played brilliant chess. For the future of Russia - and the rest of the world - I strongly hope Kasparov will not reach his political goals, which sound nice now, but in the end only may be K for president, K for a second term, K for a third term, K remains president until he dies.

Congrats to Anand for an excellent match.
Perhaps slightly off-topic, but one unfortunate conclusion one is inclined to draw from this match and from the previous one (Kramnik-Topalov), is that the world's best theoreticians – armed with the finest computers and with ample time on their side – are unable find a breach in the Petroff defense.

Yes Shirov was severely hard done by. How many other sports can this happen - you win a candidates match to play for the World champion, then you are told hold on we didnt think you would win - we want the guy you just beat to play for the championship.

Because and only because Kasparov has cheated Shirov. That's also the reason of the title mess of the last 15 years - the FIDE for once is not to blame. Kasparov is not a man to keep his word.

Interesting Kasparov quote which kind of brings it home about Kramnik - Quote:
This result ends the illusion that Kramnik is a great match player. London was a unique occurrence and I still stand with Leonid Yudasin as the only players Kramnik has ever beaten in a match! Kramnik now has some work to do. His overly-defensive play seems to represent a general decline in strength.
