A bit far-fetched, I know, but I wonder whether Kramnik was led astray in Game 3 by his own elite chess upbringing. As a member of Botvinnik's school, he will have been familiar with this game in a closely related variation of the Meran, I'm sure. Botvinnik wins by getting queen and rook to the 7th.

Well put Nietsche,

I agree that after 26.Kf1,Rg8 the position was still more or less equal.
But 27.a4 (iso of 27.f5!) invited trouble.
27.a4,Bg2+ 28.Ke1,Bh3

I still think black would have been better here even after
29.Rd1 (iso of the rather horrible 29.Ra3? Kramnik played).

29.Rd1,Rg1 30.Kd2,Rg2 would have preserved an edge for black I think. For the moment white has few active possibilities and he's gonna lose his K-side pawns (especially the important pawn on h2).
But we probably have to wait for GM Illescas commentary to be sure.

I am also curious about the consequences of 18.Nd2 (iso of the game move 18.Bf4)

That was a great game.

I feel bad for Kramnik who really took chances (e.g. 18.Bf4, which will now just be called a mistake).  I also don't think White could be worse after 26.Kf1, but Anand was relentless.  Its a shame Kramnik played 29.Ra3? and of course, 33.Bd3?? which just loses on the spot.

Well, I guess it's clear we won't see another Exchange Slav and that Anand really is the better rapid player! Smiley

ps - I bet Anand shifts to 1.e4 now!

Anand just won!,
despite missing a forced win with 33....Bxd3!.
Kramnik was apparantly in time-trouble and didnt put up much restistance after 33....Bg4.
Well, this is a great game for Anand, winning with black!, thx to superior preparation. This will probably change the character of the match.

Ra3? is bad.  I wonder what Kramnik missed?

I don't think a4 was that much of a problem since 29.Rd1 to hold the ending, but Ra3 appears almost losing.  What a shame after such interesting, aggressive play.
Anand has put together a nice attack, while two (passed) pawns down.

Good Lord,
Ptero is right with his moves 27.a4 and 29.Ra3 the ice seems to have cracked beneath Kramnik's feet.
27.a4 was rather careless, while 27.f5 opening the e3-h6 diag might have given Kramnik some counterplay.

I think Kramnik still will draw, unless he makes a mistake in timetrouble.
Besides is saw the annotations of GM Illescas on the second game.
He comments that after Nge5 iso Ndf6 black should equalize without much trouble, and adds that both players considered ..Ndf6 a mistake.

@Mubasopponent:
Indeed I see what you mean:
The commentator you refer to gave
22...h4 apparantly overlooking 23.Qh7 as indicated above.

@Ptero:
Youre 100% correct:
22...Bg3 only draws. Thats why those guys are sitting there,
and I am watching from here  Embarrassed

Well, the commentary continues to intrigue me. 22... Rg7 and "Anand is in a fighting mood"? That just allows White to simplify. Surely if he was in a fighting mood he would have played Bxg3 as you suggested.

He probably meant that Anand calculated 22...Bxg3 to a forced draw, while with 22...Bg7 black keeps some winning (and losing) chances

The predicted line has materialised on the board.
Anand pondering his answer now.
Hope he doesnt short-circuit, as Qd3 has set up the sneaky threat
Qh7 with a possible nasty end for black.
However ....Bxg3 still looks interesting to me.

@Willempie: Meran, following an "obscure" mastergame from Germany 1993 as far as I can tell, with Kramnik the first to play an improvement,
but finding Anand well prepared.

Predicting draw nr.3:
It seems 19...h5 is the most likely reply when the announced pseudo
sac should clear things up:
19....h5 (dont like 19...Rg6)  20.Nxe6,fxe 21.Rxd7,Kf8 with even chances.
Hell on 22.Qd3 even 22....Bxg3 might be viable for black.
Good preparation by Anand

So far quite interesting. I am not sure which line this is (semi-slav, QGD, meran or slav) but it looks quite interesting. Anand seems to have the initiative, while Krammers has the long term advantage I think.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

I would predict 9 a3 in the Meran. If that doesn't happen I expect 4 e3 (yawn!). It's a question of when does Kramnik want to engage in a full blown fight and whether he wants this as part of his match strategy.

I think a 6. Bd3 Meran is a possibility, its curious really, that Black is often losing a lot of games there recently even after emerging out of the opening with a playable position.

6. Bxf6 Moscow main line also possible, which Kramnik has played before and is safe.
