Hello:

I wonder are any of you going to try the Foidos broadcasting system. 10 Euro a day. I am a bit cheap myself but may consider it for a weekend game.

Hello:

I thought the reason Kramnik did well in the rapids against Topalov was that he has a better feel for the game. A wild tactician like Topalov needs to spend a lot of time calculating?? How does Anand play in terms of feel versus brute force calculation?

Take care,

Gerry

I am quite surprised that given a tied match that more people are voting for Kramnik to win the tie-break.  I think Anand will be the clear favorite in a tie-break at faster time controls.

Can I get a wake-up call after Toplalov mauls Kamsky and the real WC match begins?

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

I don't agree with Stormcrow's fantasy or reality.  But that's ok, we'll find out soon enough.  I don't think we're in for a yawn fest, and I don't think we'll see the Grunfeld.  (Thank heavens!)

I'm guessing that  Kramnik-Anand will go something more like:

1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 and Anand will probably choose between Catalan lines with 3...d5 and an English with either 3...b6 or 3...c5.

I am also guessing that Anand will generally do slightly better with opening preparation, but Kramnik will be slightly more resourceful.

This is probably the opposite of what most people will predict, but Kramnik's awesome preparation in the Kasparov match was almost non-existent in his match with Topalov.  Kramnik defeated Topalov with resourceful, creative counterplay.

I am quite surprised that given a tied match that more people are voting for Kramnik to win the tie-break.  I think Anand will be the clear favorite in a tie-break at faster time controls.

Fantasy-

Anand-Kramnik: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5
Kramnik-Anand: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5

Reality-

Kramnik-Anand: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5
Anand-Kramnik: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6

Yawn.

neither anand or carlsen answer questions directly pertaining to him being his second. Anand has not officially listed carlsen as a second but whenever asked he just says 'we have worked together... and I will not say more details' there are three seperate interviews where this was answered. Carlsen's answers have been the same too.... so I smell a rat. I know its rumors and all but if he wasn't helping anand.... Anand would simply say so. Not to mention Carlsen's long time coach is an official Anand second.

My favourite bookie has Kramnik at evens to lift the title; very generous, IMO.

(Anand 8-11, IIRC).

My reduced form reasoning: Kramnik and Anand are broadly similar in strength. Kramnik is an excellent match player, less inspiring as a  tournament player; Anand is an excellent tournament player, less inspiring as a match player. Evens? Thank you very much.

No, Timman and Karpov didn't even need an arbiter. The point is that both Kramnik and Anand have good manners and save the evil sides of their characters for the games.

Does anybody know at what time the games start?

Edit: Answering my own question: 15:00 CET.

I've gone for Vishy- I think apart from the last tournament he played in he has been consistently strong. It's often the case that players playing a 2nd world championship have won the title eg Spassky, Smyslov. I know Kortchnoi and Bologubov didn't make it though. If the semi slav is broken he could be in trouble so he must have a decent no.2 defence. If we get tactical play I would go for him over Kramnik. I just feel that Kramnik's chess is quite a bit less strong than when he won against Topalov and even that was weaker than when he dethroned GK. As ever opening prep could prove crucial as 12 games is relatively short for a match .

I have no real preference (except that I like playing the Catalan  Wink).
Nevertheless, as SmyslovFan and Gerry1970, I think Kramnik will win the match. This is an exercise in which he excells and the match will be played in Bonn not so far from Dortmund where Kramnik always feels home.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Hello:

I was surprised to see the pictures on Chessbase showing the two checking out the equipment at the same time. I realize they are on more friendly terms than some of the previous Wch pairings. However, I thought they would both want their game face on and not have to be friendly to each other. Yet they are there, apparently joking, etc. I will say that Kramnik seems the more relaxed one. It must be somewhat strange to have a play a Wch match against someone that you are fairly friendly with? Then again Kramnik has said some things, a number of months ago, diminishing Anand's crown. So strange ...

I think Kramnik will win due to his better match play record.

Toodles,

Gerry

P.S. I hope all the knowledgeable people here will be able to explain many of the great chess positions that are sure to arise!
