No, I only saw it in his "Complete Endgame Course". I assume I can reproduce the bare list here (Silman analyzes several examples from each):

"The Five Greatest Endgame Players of All Time"
In chronological order, as given:

Lasker
Rubinstein
Capablanca
Smyslov
Fischer

Essentially this is a "best before the Karpov era" list, but that's not what he called it.

Again, Kramnik, Karpov and Andersson clearly belonged on the list imho. And besides Silman's choices you could make a good case for Anand, Carlsen (though admittedly not back in 2007 when Silman published), Leko, Korchnoi and even Kasparov as No.s 4-5. Silman seems to just ignore the steady progress in strength and accuracy throughout the decades.

I would recomend this book strongly to players who are weak in endgames  Wink

Guilty as charged! But at least I'm aware of the problem, that's the first step towards improvement Wink

I already have the "Endgame Virtuoso" book on Karpov, could be interesting to compare the styles of these two great endgame players. Probably only the very best players today (Kramnik, Anand, Carlsen) have reached the same high endgame level as Karpov and Andersson.

(P.S. I was amazed to see Silman's list of the "five greatest endgame players" in his endgame manual, with Kramnik, Karpov and Andersson all missing! What was he smoking?!)

I also think it is an interesting book, especially if you want to improve your techncal skills. It is amazing what "simple positions" can be won  . You will not find fireworks in this book, just technical chess, so I would recomend this book strongly to players who are weak in endgames  Wink

I think the book is worth its money;at least due to the game selection; the commentary could sometimes be better; the variations are sometimes too much engine based (for my taste);  and a little warning; in the german edition there are some games where variations und comments are nearly identical to the megabase game (which also means it came from a grandmaster not from the authors)

Has anyone actually read the book (in german, obviously) then? Would be nice to see some opininons. One question is if the authors are really strong enough to do Andersson's games justice?

If they manage it, I will get the book at some point.

I spoke briefly with Ulf this weekend. He was unaware of the book.

TJ,

Yeah, that book has quite a few fans as it has been mentioned several times here.  It really was fantastic. It had commentary by Larsen on 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.ed ed Qf3 (and I think on his Larsen-Bird); and analysis by Hubner, Hort (I think) and others.  A great book that deserves to be reprinted!

Hmm, in my Swedish edition Larsen's section contains two Nimzo Indians as main games and some extra game illustrations of blockade. Anyhow, it's a brilliant chessbook largely due to its selection of players who all give different perspectives on the game of chess.

Well, there's finally a book on Ulf: https://www.schachversand.de/e/detail/buecher/10244.html

With chapter titles like "Prophylaxis," "Catalan Endgames," and "Struggle in the Hedgehog" this is hard to resist, even with my rudimentary German. (I also wear comfortable sweaters, drive slowly, and work in a library, why do you ask?  Smiley

So I'm posting here in hopes that one of our friends from Chess Stars, Quality Chess, or Mongoose will take notice and publish an English translation soon!

Since Chessgate is the publisher you should probably ask them if there will be an english edition. It shouldn't be impossible, e.g. they published Seel's Philidor book in german and english - so if you're prepared to wait a year...

Anyway, thanks for posting it's nice to see that Ulf is finally getting some recognition Smiley

Btw, as far as I know, Andersson hasn't written any book himself. But he was one of several GMs featured in a book many years ago. Every GM was supposed to comment on two games, one of their own and one that deeply influenced them. IIrc the english title is something like Learn from the Grandmasters

Thanks Maturin!

And there I thought we'd have to wait Andersson passed before we'd get a decent bio.  Do you know if this book contains his correspondence games as well as his otb gems?

RE: "The book by the Indian MAster is in fact by Ravikumar "

Thanks.  It seems you are right...I guess the Thipsay book would be
VERY hard to find since it doesn't exist.  Now, its time to try and find the Ravikumar book.
