At the time I read it, Art of the Middlegame by Kotov and Keres was an eye-opener for me.

Among more recent books, the Ultimate Chess Strategy Book is very good for 1.d4 players.

I think the most instructive books are the best well annotated Tournament books, there you get the truth of competitive chess with the good games , blunders etc. all mixed together so you see in practice how real games are won and lost.

So historically I suggest New York 24, Zurich 53, Piatgorsky 1966 can any one suggest some good more modern tournament books?

But I personally get the most out of well-annotated games from strong positional players, rather than textbooks.  For example, Karpov has some great annotated game collections.  I think picking a "hero" who plays the same sort of opening/middlegame positions as you and slowly going over their annotated games it the way to go.  BTW, my first hero was Capablanca... Wink

I tend to agree for the most part, although good "textbooks" on the middlegame use lightly annotated master games with a lot of explanatory prose to illustrate ideas that may not always be explicitly stated in annotated games collections. Reassess, Simple Chess, etc do this. Not precisely strategy, but Improve Your Chess Now is another wonderful book for this level. Tisdall discusses Kotov's method of thinking and why he believes there is a better way.

What about Dvoretsky's volume 3: "Strategic Play"?
It's not nearly as advanced as his other works in the series.
I also think Rowson's books are excellent.

I'm not really sure what an intermediate player is or what you have read before. I like Silman's "How To Reasses You Chess" but not other books by him. Gelfer's "Positional Chess Handbook" is also good. There are many other books available.

This and the amateurs mind also by Silman.

I agree with Edge, i forgot about Stean  Sad

Stean's Book simple chess, is a must have.
By the way Dover has published a cheap algebraic edition a few years back.

I'm in the mid-2100s.  I found Silman's _How to Reasses Your Chess_ and _Reassess Your Chess Workbook_ very helpful.  Also his _The Amateur's Mind_.

I reread Stean's _Simple Chess_ before every big tournament.

Watson's _Chess Strategy: Advances Since Nimzovich_ isn't meant as an instructional book, but I learned quite a bit from it.

I found that studying endgames (I used Dvoretsky's Manual) improved my strategic thinking.

John Nunn, Chess Move by Move
Marovic Dynamical Pawn Play in Chess.

Gelfers book is very usefull but a large part is devoted to
endgame strategy.
