Apparently not! I saw there is a stalemate after all in the line: 1. Nh6 f6! 2. Nxf6+ Kf8 3. Rd8+ Kg7 4. Rd7 Kh8!!

And 1. Nh6 f6! 2. Nf8 KxNf8 3. Rd8+ QxRd8 wins for Black.

this seems a hard nut to crack.. Sad

1. Nf3 Kf8 2. Rd7 Qc5+ and the Queen breaks loose.

1. Nxf7 Kf8 2. Rd8+ Kg7 3. Rd7 Qc5+ is again possible.

on 1. Ne4 Kf8 I see nothing for White..

So far I prefer (spoilers):

1. Nh6 Qh4 2. Nf6+Kf8 3. Rd8+ Kg7 4. Rg8+ Kh6 5. Rh8+ Kg5 6. RxQh4 KxRh4 and now 7. g4 or 7. Nd7 (amongst other moves) seems to win.
1. Nh6 f5 or f6 2. N(x)f6+ and now the Queen is lost to Rd8+/Rd7, while the f-pawn cannot queen.
Finally, 1. Nh6 Qd7+ or 1. Nh6 Qh4 2. Nf6+ QxNf6 3. exQf6 do not lead to a stalemate. 1. Nh6 QxRd6 2. exQd6 promotes.

Close? Huh

I tried all kinds of random knight moves (Nh7, Ne4, Nf7! (you dont lose your knight), but finally settled for Nf3, controlling h4 and g5 and trapping the queen.

1.Nf3

Then I got really excited. Kf8 is met by Rd7 Qe8 Rd8, and f5 is met by Nd4 Qh7 Rd8 Ke7 Rd7.

However, there is f6. Nd4 now does not work due to fxe5 Rxe6 exd4 Rxe7 Kxe7, and Black wins. After some thinking, I finally found:

Ng5!

And now fxe5 does not work due to Rxe6 and now the white knight is not lost.

fxg5 g4!

Now the queen has to move on the 7th rank, and then White can play Rd8 and Rd7 winning the queen.

Is this correct?

Simple?  I get it for the first time in ages, and you call it simple?  (whimper)

Solution to the previous study:

1.Ka6    Re7
2.Bb7    Rxb7
3.b5!!    Rb8
4.Kxa7  Rh8
5.Kxb6

quite simple study but a nice motive to remember.

I think I got it (you can never be so sure about these studies though!). And a note: I too prefer studies with a 'real game' flavour!

Caveat: Spoilers follow:

Not 100% if some 'souldering' is needed in the end, I calculated that the White King is able to cover first the queening-square anyway. Or am I wrong?

I like this sort of puzzle best; it combines real, usable endgame knowledge with the extra challenge of finding a series of only moves to reach the draw.

Nice choice, Gunter!

I didn't get the last one.  In fact, it took me a few seconds to verify that Be7 was truly mate!  Wow, what a beautifully conceived puzzle.

Thanks again, Gunter!
