Hi John,

composers try to hide the solution and even strong chessmasters like you (or in some cases even computerprogramms) cant find the complete solution from the initialposition. But there are many gamelike studies which show pretty ideas in (seemingly) clear positions with few pieces.
I think they are useful and fun for every tournament player. I hope you like (i am sure you solve) the next study.

Solution to te previous study:

1. Rg7!             Kf3
2. Rc7              Rh5
3. Kd4              Rc5
4. Rxc5             bxc
5. Kd3!             b1 Q (R) stalemate

Gunter, thanks for these. Personally I liked the last one because it isn't often I see a study I can actually solve. That's the advantage of studies from that era to my mind. Once they get hard rather than pretty I lose interest; feeble-minded of me, no doubt.

That ending is quite cute, but the dearth of plausible alternatives does rather nudge one towards the solution.

Well, maybe that's just a quibble; not sure if that is considered a major drawback among study afficionados?

I enjoyed the last Knight puzzle.  It was very similar to (or perhaps even the same as) an old puzzle I remember from years ago.

This Rook ending seems trivially easy, which means I must be missing something major.

Yep, I missed something major!  1.Rc7?? Rh5+ followed by 2...Rc5 ruins white's Christmas, which means there may be only one other way to slow down the pawn from queening.

That's very nice, and pretty tough!
Quite naturalistic setting too...

Very nice ending; I had a lot of fun solving it.  Smiley
Must say, it took me quite some time , even though it is all quite logical.

Ask yourself a more interesting question: what would you play as Black after 1 Kb7?

I would say Kb7-Kc8 since the others fail and this is the only thing that will bother the knigget. Though I cold be wrong.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Thanks for so many interest and nice replies! I want to show some real nice practical studies here as a chesspuzzle. The solution will follow one week later. I hope many chessfriends enjoy the nice ideas in the positions.

Ok, lets start:

Since you are a study composer, I would welcome some of your own studies here as well!
