There is also 1...Nc4 2.a6 Ne5, but that appears easily parried by 3.Kc7. I'll have to work harder on this one to see where Black's defensive idea is; it just seems way too simple for a study. Also, Günther's question suggests White's 1st move may be something different from the obvious 1.Ba4. If there is another 1st move in this position, I'd say it's even more amazing than 4.h4!!!! in the previous study.

I think the first move has to be 1.Ba4

if
1...d1
2.Bxd1 Nxd1
3.a6 Nc3
4.a7 Nxe4
5.a8(Q) Nf6 (Nxg3 Qf3)

I believe White is winning.

1...Nc4
2.a5 Nb6
3.Bd1 followed by Kb7 and a7-a8.

Ok, I think I got it.

Instead of Kc7, you follow Girkassa's line and play until the move d6. Then you take on f8 and play d7. After b1Q Ka7 Qe4, you play d8(Q) Qe8 Qd7 Kg8 Qe7 Qf8 and then push the d pawn down again. Then you play Qf8 and d7 again. You are one tempo in time.

By the way, what's wrong with my second solution?

Well, you're qouting my line exactly. The problem, as I said, is that in the end, Black can play Qc8 instead of Qf8, since White's king is now on a7.

I agree, Dink, two exclamation marks are not enough for such a deep, brilliant move. I wish I could give it at least four.

Can't make out exactly what you're proposing in your first line, but I believe we have thrashed out most of the wrinkles there.

1 Kc6? g1(Q)
2 d7  Qe3
3 d8(Q) Qe8+
4 Qxe8+ Kxe8
5 Kc7 Kf8.

The solution (as alluded to earlier) is
1 Kc8 g1(Q)
2 d7 Qc1+
3 Kb7 Qe3
and now the key move:
4 h4...two exclamation marks are scarcely enough for this move. The idea is that after h5, gh, Black gets mated after d8(Q) Qe8, Qd6+, since the Pg6 has been deflected. If Black doesn't play ...gh, the h-pawn scurries through. Details left as an exercise for the reader.

The whole concept is amazing; this is my favourite study by a long chalk.

OK, here's the solution:

If you don't want to see the score, look away NOW

In the second diagram, there's a little arrow on the right of the diagram pointing the way to the solution!

I would certainly not have reached the solution without this subliminal clue.

Once you push e4, Black needs to play de, promote the e-pawn, and then meet d8(Q) with ..Qe8.

So 3...Kf8!

Hmm, I think I got it (At least I hope so).

1.d8(Q) Qe8
2.Qxe8 Kxe8
3.Kc7 and then push the e-pawn and then d-pawn?

By the way I think 1.Kc6 from the initial diagram might also give a win.

1...Ke8 2.Kc7 and White wins a tempo.

1...g1(Q)
2.d7 Qc3
3.Kb6 Qe3
4.d8(Q) Qe8
5.Qxe8 Kxe8
6.Kxa5 Kd7
7.Kxb5 Ke6
8.Kc5 Kf6
9.Kxd5

This seems to win. White will play e4 (so Black cannot play ...f5 and create a passed pawn) and then push the d pawn. Does this win?

The clue is to study Gunter's second diagram very, very carefully  Smiley
