Gunter,

You're right, this is quite a bit more tricky than the standard winning positions.

But since I was lucky enough to have Batsford Chess Endings right next to me when I saw your post, I thought this exception would be relatively well known. (The position you gave is "KP 16a", part of a 1932 Grigoriev study.)  However, it isn't in Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual , the book.  I didn't check his CD.

Even BCE, with Speelman as the main author, gives the solution four exclamation marks in total, and you're right, the idea is very difficult to find unless you have seen it before.

I still love these!

Btw: for everyone else: 1.Qa3? is probably the most obvious try, but:  1...Kd2 2.Qa2 Kc3! (better than 2...Kd1? 3.Ke4 c1(Q) 4.Kd3 +-) 3.Qa3 Kd2=.

I really like this one (Q vs c-pawn)  even tho the idea can be found in most endgame books.  Keep giving us these "easy" ones!  They're often good for me, and also excellent for my advanced students!

Cheers! Cool

This is very surprising for me.
According to theory, the white king must be on d5,e4,f4 or g4 ?
Here the white king is on e5  and therefore it should be a draw, but the black king is also misplaced on d3.
I think this positon is   quite tricky?

The nice solution to this really game-like study:

1.Qc6 Kb8
2.Qd6 Kc8 (a8)
3.Qd8 Kb7
4.Qxb6!! winning

"Applause" - It's easy to see that 4...ab6 is losing to 5.Nd8, but I wonder if anyone here would recognize in a real played game, that 4...Kb6 is answered by 5.a5 and Black can choose between parting with his queen or mate. Real nice and surprising.

Gunter,

Thank you for the link!  I've added it to my favorites list.  I hope we will see more studies here soon.

Cheers!

Nice one.
Great thematic timing.

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.
