Günther: Oooooooooooooooooh that's a beautiful final position! I don't feel like posting the solution yet; others deserve to experience the joy of solving it as well.

The answer to your question is that castling is always considered legal unless it is demonstrably illegal  Smiley

I got stuck after the promotion. I never did find 5. g6, but after the solution was given, it seemed so simple. I couldn't believe I missed it.  Shocked

My style is somewhere between that of Petrosian and Tal.

Yes, that's the position. Not to forget the important sideline 4...g6 5.Nxg6+ Kxf7 6.Nf4, when White's lengthy manoeuvres have helped him move his king from h5 to h7 (so that 6...Nxf4 is no longer with check) before Black had the time to play ...Bb8!

Yes.

1 Nh8 Kg8
2 f7+ Kf8
3 Kg6 a2
4 Kh7 a1 (Q)... Black is a Queen up at this point, and White still has a bit to do to close the net.

originally here I wanted to play 5 Bb4 ch Nxb4, 6 g6 but then 6...Qh1 wins...which leads to:

5 g6 Qh1
6 Bh6! and this position is really incredible...(no escape offered by 6...Ke7, 7 Bg5+)

Ok

Lets try:

1. Bd5          Qxg7
2. Bc6          Kb4
3. c3            Kxc4  [Kb3 4. Nd2 Ka2 5. Bd5 Ka1 6. Nb3 Ka2 7. Nd4 Ka1
                             8. Nc2 checkmate]
4. Kc2          Qxc3
5. bxc  stalemate

Any ideas to improve this variation?

!  Another nice one - I am still working on a solution for White but in the meantime I offer a selfmate in 2: 1.Kd2 Qf4 2.Kc3 Qd4 mate  Grin
