Yes, another nice one and not too hard to solve comfortably. The finish is similar to #6.
Günter, I like your studies. Do you have another one of yourselve to show us?  Smiley

That study is wonderful!

Gunter, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the creative process. It all seems a bit like magic to me, which I suppose is the whole point!

Gunter,

I like this one! It almost feels like a game, and it has a bunch of false leads.  I haven't cracked it yet, but I will think about it until I drift off to sleep.  Thanks!

Very nice, Gunter  Smiley

Would you mind briefly sketching the process by which you compose such a study. It would certainly be interesting to understand how a study composer goes about his work.

If i have discovered a study-like position i try to add some more (hidden) moves (in ideal case no captures or checks) to reach the heart of the study and keep an (almost) game-like charakter .This can be very difficult or sometimes even impossible. In this example the move 3.Nd4 is very hard to find and white has some natural possibilities to go wrong. Unfortuntately no black piece (bishop or knight) makes one single move in the mainline which is a big handicap (this is one of my first studies, today i try it to make better).

In some composing tournaments the mainline of the study must contain a given stipulation. Let´s take the last team worldchampionship:

Section D: Studies
Judges: Belarus, Finland, Georgia, Israel, Romania
Reserve judge: Belgium

In a position in the main line of a win or draw study where an unprotected white or black piece A is directly attacked, White or Black instantaneously (right on the following move) places another piece B (of the same colour as A) en-prise (again unprotected and directly attacked). This thematic move resulting in the two white or the two black pieces A & B hanging, must be a quiet one, i.e. not a check, nor a capture. A and B may be any pieces except pawns.

Example:

G. Kasparian
1 Pr Magyar Sakkelet 1969

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Draw (4+2) 1. Kg4! Qc8+ 2.Kf3!! (2.Kh4 Qf8!) Qb7+
3. Rd5!! (thematic!) Q:b1 4.Ra5+ Kb7
5.Rb5+ Draw.

Maybe somebody wants to make a try to comopse a position which contains the required theme ?  Smiley

And what happens after 1..Nxf3?

I can only see winning rook for pawn, picking up pawn, then mating with Knight & Bishop.

But then I'm rubbish at studies!

Gunter,

Please don't tell us the answer until after the weekend!

I know the pawn on c4 has to be significant, but I haven't figured out quite why yet.

(Oh, and thanks for the Smyslov study!)

Fantastic study; difficult and brilliant from the very first move!!

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.
