Thanks SF and Michael. The shredder website is certainly useful for checking out endgame positions and avoiding basic errors like mine!

Such endgames can always be checked with 6-men database, e.g. Shredder

1.Qd5 Ke3 2.Qa2 Kd3 3.Qb2 Kd2 4.Ke4 Kd1 5.Kd3 and White wins.

I don't see a variation that draws.

1. Qd5!  Ke3 (1...Kc3 2.Qd4; 1... Ke2 2.Qa2!)
2. Qg2!  c1D
3. Qg5

Hope no one minds me going back to this study discussed in April. As Smyslov Fan pointed out this appears in Batsford Chess Endings as KP16a, apparently part of a Grigoriev 1932 study. I found it in BCE the other day and have been racking my brains over the solution given as it seems to be bust. Surely 1. Qd5 Ke2 2. Qa2 Kd3 is a clear draw?

I look forward to better chess brains than mine pointing out my error!

OK, with the pawn on a6 it's pretty clear. With the pawn on a7, I'm still not sure if it's a draw if Black marches his king to a6, makes White play b4, and then plays c6. However, looking at it again, 4...c5! seems to be a simpler (and possibly the only) way to draw.

This feels more like a game fragment than a study; just look at the Q-side pawns. There are so many possibilities to try to effect some sort of breakthrough, and Black has numerous possible configurations to thwart same, that it seems too 'bushy' to be a good study.

BTW, I can't find a win after trapping the BQ, although I can see how it might be possible.

Hi,

My friend and I analysed the queen trap puzzle, and we found out some interesting possibilities.

After 1.Nd4 Qg7 2.Kh3 Qxh6 3.Nf4! as mentioned by Gunter Amman, White will play Nde6 Kg4 h5 and run the queen to the queenside to win a breakthrough. I am not too sure, but I think that White can win this one.

Well, surely that is exactly what needs to be demonstrated. If you could solve studies with vague assertions, things would be a lot easier  Smiley

A critical line is where Black sacs his queen with 3..Kd7 4.Nde6 Qxe6 5.Nxe6 Kxe6 6.Kg4 Kxe5 7.Kg5 White will win the h-pawn, but Black might be able to trap the king in the corner. However, due to the presence of pawns on the queenside, White still has chances. After analysing the position with my friend, we found out that Black needs to lose 2 tempi on the queenside in order to draw, but he can only lose 1 tempo if played correctly. The line we analysed is 7...h5. After

8.Kxh5 Kf5
9.Kh6 Kf6
10.h5 c6
11.b3! wins.

The idea of hunting and dominating  the queen inspired composers all the time. I want to show an example by V. Platov from 1905!(!)

I don't see a win either. I can lock in the Black queen and play it like a pawn endgame where Black is lacking some squares for the king, but there is one setup which I don't see how to overcome. I'm trying to find a way to release Black's queen at the right moment and play for mate, but currently I'm not getting anywhere.

White to play and win, I don't know if a human brain can possibly find the main idea. Check that forum for solutions.

Do you know the author of the study? I can find a quite obvious idea which locks in the black queen, but i cant imagine that this position is more than a draw.

You only need the second nice win after 1...Rg8 and the correct way for the white king to reach f7, then your solution is complete.  Smiley

Wow Girkassa, that was a really detailed explanation. Thanks Smiley.

After looking at what Spuler wrote, let me guess at the solution.

1.g7 h2
2.gxh8(Q) h1(Q)+
Now run the king to f6, let black skewer the queen...

3.Kf7 Qxh8
4.Bd8 Kb7 or Kd7
5.c8(Q) Kxc8
6.Bf6

Is this correct?

I am looking fr a selection of endgame studies with only a few pieces on the board , say 6 or less, so I can remember or concisely write down the position and try to solve them in my head  during boring moments in bus queues,  etc.

Can anyone suggest a goodsource?

How I solved #202? At the beginning I tried all kinds of possible moves and concluded I don't see a winning continuation. It was very obvious that after first white moves except 1.g7 or 1.Bf6 there is absolutely no chance for a win. So I calculated deeper 1.g7 and 1.Bf6. After 1.g7 I found no way to avoid the perpetual except giving the queen. Again I thought about all possibilities at the beginning. I went deeper in 1.g7 and giving the queen with my king at e6. No chance... Calculating deeper I found that giving the queen with my king on f7 seems the first litte something I could see in the whole study. But how to put in prison the black queen? Theres the a8 square to escape. No chance....
Thats the reason why I then concentrated on 1.Bf6 and trying to escape the checks and then to win with the bishop and the pawns. Absolutely no chance.... At this point I felt like a computer! All this stupid calculation... I decided to search any idea. After all continuations I tried so far I couldn't find any idea except for the one with giving the queen with the king on f7! How to take the possibility of escaping from the black queen? Then I got this beautiful idea! The rest was rather simple, find some minor lines and the right route for the white king to f7.
Maybe a composer can tell us a story of how he composed a study. This would be very interesting.

Found it by myself, yes. I'm 2400-ish, one norm short of the IM title. How I see this kind of stuff? Well, I could try to reconstruct my thoughts when I solved the study (Günther hasn't confirmed that it's the solution, but since he hasn't commented on it, and since it looks winning, I believe it is):

1.e6 - This has to be the first move, as it's a simple draw if Black captures the e pawn.

1...g3 - Not as obvious, but White threatens 2.e7 Ba4 3.Bf7, so Black has to do something about it. The first line that came to mind was 1...Ba4 2.Bf7 Bb3 3.Bg6+ winning. Then I saw Black could get the same position with the pawn on g3, which could hardly be a disadvantage - Black gets closer to counterplay based on the weak White king position.

2.Bf7 - In case of 2.e7, Black plays 2...Bh5 followed by 3...Be8, and then Black can simly pick up the pawn with his king. Therefore, this move seemed to be the only way to achieve something

2...Ke3! - This is where it got hard. In a game, I might very well have calculated only 2...Bb3 3.Bg6+, concluding that White wins by "normal" means. However, since this is a study, you know there has to be something more, so I kept searching. And since White's e pawn can't be stopped by normal means, the reduced material only gives one more possibility: Counterplay against White's king. I saw the moves Ke3, Kf2, Bf3, but at first, I thought White could simply play Kg1 when needed. Then I saw 2...Ke3 also threatened 3...Bb3, when 4.Bg6 is no longer with check. Thus, the move 2...Ke3, with an amusing double threat, suggested itself even before I had established that there is no win for White after 3.e7 Kf2 4.e8=Q Bf3.

3.Be8!! - This is where it got really hard. First, I established that, after 3.e7 Kf2, promoting to a rook wouldn't prevent the stalemate, that a bishop would be useless, and that a knight would even lose. Then I quickly looked at 4.Bd5 Ba4, but since White has to prevent ...Bc6, he can't make any progress there. Therefore, I searched for other moves than 3.e7, trying to find something after 3.Kg1 Bb3 4.Bg8 Ba4, but there just wasn't anything. Having looked at 3.e7 and 3.Kg1, there weren't really a lot of other useful moves left. Then it struck me: If White could get to the a8-g2 diagonal before Black, there wouldn't be time for stalemate. The ideal square for the bishop must be c6, where it not only protects the diagonal, but also covers e8 - and that square is available in two moves! Again, it helped a lot to know this is a study: You know there is a win, so you don't stop searching, and also, 3.Be8 is the kind of study-like move that could very well be the solution. If this had been a real game, I would probably have played 3.e7 Kf2 4.e8=Q Bf3 5.Bd5, hoping Black would resign, and if he played 5...Bxg2+ 6.Bxg2, it would at least be a very amusing end to the game.

3...Kf2 - Quickly calculating 3...Bf3 4.Kg1 and 3...Bb3 4.e7 Kf2 5.Bc6, this move appeared to be the only sensible move left.

4.Bc6 - White has to prevent 4...Bf3, and this is the only way.

4...Be2 - Since White's e pawn is still unstoppable, Black has to continue playing against g2. Having already seen the stalemate theme, I knew White couldn't rely on g2 being defended by the bishop, and the manoeuvre ...Be2-f1 suggested itself as the quickest route to f1.

5.e7 Bf1 - Like Cox, I tried to find a way to get this position with Black to move, but I couldn't find any, and anyway, I just couldn't believe then position to be anything but won after 6.e8=N. Black can never exchange the bishop for either of White's pieces, meaning that White can always drive away Black's king with a knight check, covered by the bishop. If White threatens Ne4+, Black has to play ...Ke3 in order to save his pawn, and then White's king can escape from the corner. Once I saw that, I thought it just had to be winning somehow.

As you see, my thinking in this, and most other, studies, is pretty much a process of elimination. I often don't find the right continuation until I've seen that all other sensible moves are useless.

Really very nice!! (#202) I needed nearly 2 hours to recognize the main idea. It's a study of the kind "Don't stop calculating if your evaluation of the position seems obvious". I also like the last few studies. Very nice ideas!  Smiley

iirc Sveshnikov-Kasparov? If yes => 0-1

Edit: No, I've just checked and it's another game though with similar pawn structures, so let me think..

Edit2: OK, I've looked at this for a while but cannot see how White can save it. Play could be similar to the game I quoted above, or else Black may in-between push his K-side pawns in order to weaken the e4-pawn or create a weak base at f3 (then according to the principle of 2 weaknesses White loses / Black has also many tempo moves if needed). Is there sth I'm missing?

Well, that's what I thought. But IMHO if that's the answer this study is not as good as all that. I hate studies where the answer takes lengthy analysis. Especially since the position before e8=N is mutual zugzwang, and it's so irritating that I can't make it Black's move. But perhaps I can't.

Studies where Black can almost do something clever but can't quite are aesthetically a bit of a problem, as I see it.

Well, Gunter?!

I'm tempted to give my own offering (as in a study I like, not one I've composed). W Kh4, B e7, Ps g5, g6, c7. B Kc6, Rh8 Ph7, h4. W to play and win. Sorry, too stupid to do the diagram thing.

Many will have seen this before - it's in Nunn's Endgame Challenge - but I thought it was very impressive in an impossible-till-you-see-it way, which is what I like.

OK, if I got it correct, the solution goes like this:

1.e6      g3
2.Bf7     Ke3!

(2...Bb3 3.Bg6+ and 4.e7)

3.Be8!!

White blocks his own pawn, but still, Black can not stop it, so he has to create counterplay.

3...        Kf2

(3...Bb3 4.e7 Bd5 5.Kg1)

4.Bc6     Be2
5.e7       Bf1
6.e8=N!

And although it will take quite a long time, White will eventually take Black's pawn, force Black to give up the bishop for White's pawn, and mate with bishop and knight.

I think I've got it! In the spirit of this thread, I won't post the solution yet, but I can reveal Black's defensive idea:

1.e6 g3 2.Bf7 Ke3 3.e7 Kf2 4.e8=Q Bf3 5.Bd5 Bxg2+ 6.Bxg2 stalemate! So, somewhere along this line White has to improve.

Once again, a brilliant defensive idea! Took me ten minutes to see why pushing the e-pawn wasn't a simple win. In other words, I would have done just the same thing as your friend. Man, this is hard!

Gunter,

That's unfair!

If I saw this in a game between two 1700s I would push the e-pawn and try to win by brute force.  Only afterwards would I realise there's a drawing mechanism available to Black.

This is gonna be hard.

White to play and win

I want to tell a little story to this position. I showed this study with reversed colours to a friend of mine (quite strong IM) and told him that i saw this ending in a clubgame between two players rated about 1700 elo. I asked him to assess the position and after few minutes he thought its an easy win. In fact he was not able to win the position after many  tries (of course he did not knew that is a study at the beginning  but he realized it soon)

Oh my. The reason I didn't think 4.a6 was working, was the line 5.a7 Kh5 6.a8=Q g6 7.Qa2 d1=Q 8.Qh2+ Nxh2 9.Bxd1+ Ng4 10.Bxg4+ Kxg4 11.Kc7 h5 12.e5 h4 13.gxh4 gxh4 14.e6 h3 15.e7 h2 16.e8=Q h1=Q 17.Qxg6+ and we have the position I mentioned with Q v Q. But.. is it as simple as 6.a8=R ? Black will no longer be zugzwanged, and while he has some dangerous pawns, the e pawn seems to assure White's victory.

Indeed the initial position looks realy innocent (and natural!) but blacks defence is based on the stalemate idea Ng4! Kg6-h5! and g6!

Ok

1. Ba4  Ng4!! (after Kg6 white wins with g4! destroying blacks defence)
2. Bd1! (1.a6 Kg6! 2.a7 Kh5 3.a8Q g6! white can not win!) Nf2!
3. Bb3 Kg6 and now after 4.g4? he can play Nd3! intending Nc5 and black will not loose! So best is 4.a6! and blacks response is 4... Ng4!

How can white this position?

Indeed, a brilliant defensive idea. However, unless I've missed something, that's the main brilliancy of the study. That said, I may indeed have missed something. In my head, the main line continues 2.Bd1 Ne3 3.Bb3+ Kg6 4.g4 (looks like 4.a6 almost works, but leads to Q v Q in the end!), when I can't really see a good continuation for Black. He can get a pawn to the 2nd rank in a couple of ways, but White stops it in time. Are there more brilliancies that I've overlooked?

unbelievable idea ; the study is a little bit sneaky, because black has a brilliant idea, which unfortunately doesnt work.

There is also 1...Nc4 2.a6 Ne5, but that appears easily parried by 3.Kc7. I'll have to work harder on this one to see where Black's defensive idea is; it just seems way too simple for a study. Also, Günther's question suggests White's 1st move may be something different from the obvious 1.Ba4. If there is another 1st move in this position, I'd say it's even more amazing than 4.h4!!!! in the previous study.

I think the first move has to be 1.Ba4

if
1...d1
2.Bxd1 Nxd1
3.a6 Nc3
4.a7 Nxe4
5.a8(Q) Nf6 (Nxg3 Qf3)

I believe White is winning.

1...Nc4
2.a5 Nb6
3.Bd1 followed by Kb7 and a7-a8.

Ok, I think I got it.

Instead of Kc7, you follow Girkassa's line and play until the move d6. Then you take on f8 and play d7. After b1Q Ka7 Qe4, you play d8(Q) Qe8 Qd7 Kg8 Qe7 Qf8 and then push the d pawn down again. Then you play Qf8 and d7 again. You are one tempo in time.

By the way, what's wrong with my second solution?

Well, you're qouting my line exactly. The problem, as I said, is that in the end, Black can play Qc8 instead of Qf8, since White's king is now on a7.

I agree, Dink, two exclamation marks are not enough for such a deep, brilliant move. I wish I could give it at least four.

Can't make out exactly what you're proposing in your first line, but I believe we have thrashed out most of the wrinkles there.

1 Kc6? g1(Q)
2 d7  Qe3
3 d8(Q) Qe8+
4 Qxe8+ Kxe8
5 Kc7 Kf8.

The solution (as alluded to earlier) is
1 Kc8 g1(Q)
2 d7 Qc1+
3 Kb7 Qe3
and now the key move:
4 h4...two exclamation marks are scarcely enough for this move. The idea is that after h5, gh, Black gets mated after d8(Q) Qe8, Qd6+, since the Pg6 has been deflected. If Black doesn't play ...gh, the h-pawn scurries through. Details left as an exercise for the reader.

The whole concept is amazing; this is my favourite study by a long chalk.

OK, here's the solution:

If you don't want to see the score, look away NOW

In the second diagram, there's a little arrow on the right of the diagram pointing the way to the solution!

I would certainly not have reached the solution without this subliminal clue.

Once you push e4, Black needs to play de, promote the e-pawn, and then meet d8(Q) with ..Qe8.

So 3...Kf8!

Hmm, I think I got it (At least I hope so).

1.d8(Q) Qe8
2.Qxe8 Kxe8
3.Kc7 and then push the e-pawn and then d-pawn?

By the way I think 1.Kc6 from the initial diagram might also give a win.

1...Ke8 2.Kc7 and White wins a tempo.

1...g1(Q)
2.d7 Qc3
3.Kb6 Qe3
4.d8(Q) Qe8
5.Qxe8 Kxe8
6.Kxa5 Kd7
7.Kxb5 Ke6
8.Kc5 Kf6
9.Kxd5

This seems to win. White will play e4 (so Black cannot play ...f5 and create a passed pawn) and then push the d pawn. Does this win?

Aaarghhh, in Girkassa's line, I thought the rather prosaic 14 Qxe8 Kxe8, 15 Kb6 wins, but after 15...Kd7, 16 Kxa5 Kc6!, it's just drawn

Best I can do so far is 1.Kc8 g1=Q 2.d7 Qc1+ 3.Kb7 Qe3 4.d8=Q+ Qe8 5.Qd6+ Kg8 6.Qe7 Qf8 7.e4 b4 8.exd5 b3 9.d6 b2 10.Qxf8+ Kxf8 11.d7 b1=Q+ 12.Ka7 Qe4 13.d8=Q+ Qe8 and I see no win for White - with the king on a7 instead of b7, Black has 14.Qd6+ Kg8 15.Qe7 Qc8. I have a feeling that the solution includes getting this position with White's king on b7, as that would be the most "study-like" - I just can't see how to do it.

Hmm, it seems like the only problem is perpetual check, so White just has to find a way to stop perpetual check.

1. Kc7 g1(Q) 2.d7 Qc1 3.Kb6 Kg8 4.d8(Q)+ Kh7 5.Qf8 Qh6 6.Qxf7 Kh8 7.Qg7+ Qxg7 8.fxg7 Kxg7

Now White can whack the pawns. I don't really seem a difference between whacking a5 or b5, but it seems that whacking a5 allows White to get back faster, so...

9.Kxa5 Kf6 10.Kxb5 Ke6 11.Kc5 g5 12.e3

White wins!

This solution seems too easy to be one for a endgame study, so I bet there are some hidden resources somewhere, but yah well...

I also took 2-3 mins and ended up with the same line as TN, so either it's the correct solution or there's a hidden point which is easy to miss when you do it quickly.

That's an great Queen triangulation. I'm also amazed if you solved this in 2-3' (if it is correct). I was looking at it for more than 15' and could not force Ka8 with a tempo! (finally I gave up Embarrassed).

P.S.: Pb7 is important as it also allows for a fortress after the underpromotion 6. h8=B.

Here's my solution (took me about 2-3 minutes to solve so I may have made an error):

1.b6! (all other moves draw) 1...Kb8! (1...Kb6 2.h4 a5 3.h5 a4 4.h6 a3 5.h7 a2 6.h8=Q and White wins) 2.h4 a5 3.h5 a4 4.h6 a3 5.h7 a2 6.h8=Q a1=Q 7.Qg8! and White wins, since Black cannot prevent Kd7/Ke7 with checkmate. And after 7...Qa2 8.Qe8 Qa4 9.Qe5 Ka8 10.Qh8! Black will be mated in a few moves.

Very nice study, the b7-pawn makes all the difference! Wink

Hello,

meanwhile i tried almost every posslibilities to defend the black position. One interesting is maybe

1.Nxf7 Qh4
2.Nd8  Qh5
3.Rxe6 Kf8
4.Rf6    Ke8
5.Nc6    Qh3! (more trickier than Qf5)
6.Kb7    Qb3 now black has Qc4 check in some lines
7.Kxa7 (Kc7!?)

But after examining these lines i must conclude that white is probably also winnig after Nxf7 which of course  refutes the study. You are right i could place the knight in the initial positon on f8. Another solution would be to insert a black pawn on h7 or 3(!) black a-pawns (a7,a6,a5)
in the initial postion. Unfortunately i think the position loses the natural character. Nevertheless i think i  found a solution and i hope it works correctly this time.

Hi Günter!
A problem in one single study should't prevent you from continuing your presentation of selected studies. I like the one in #114. It's not very easy to get it from the initial position without moving (I failed) and it has its points. I already like the aesthetic piece arrangement. I searched for different stalemates, but the very nice one from the solution I missed completely first.
By the way the aforementioned problem is repairable by putting the white knight on f8 at the beginning. But then some attractiveness disappears of course. Maybe you can find a better repaired variation of your idea. I never composed a study. About how long do you need for one of the kind you presented here?
Kind regards, Spüler

Hello,
Indeed, after 1.Nxf7 Qh4 2.Nd8 Qg5 3.Rxe6+ Kf8 4.Nc6 Günters move 4...Qg4! is based on another fantastic resource of defense: To use the stalemate motif to force the white king out and then having a perpetual. In the line 5.Kd7 Kf7 6.Nd8+ Kf8 7.Kc7! Qc4! 8.Rc6 Qg4! 9.Rf6+ Ke8 10.Rd6 Qg7 11.Kc8 Qg4 I tried to improve with 12.Kb8 or 9.Kb8 or the waiting move 7.g3, but in the first two cases the knight must go to b7 to protect the a5 pawn and then the white king has not as much space as in the real "Spüler position" with the knight on c6, and in the latter case White gives the g-pawn in a slow way because Black can reposition his queen quickly. The reason why I didn't go further with 4.Rf6+ to get a "Spüler position" is not I thought the game were drawn after Kxa6 but because I thought it would go even better than allowing to cut off the white king temporarily.
Of course White can not force the best "Spüler position". Otherwise we wouldn't need any concrete analysis. But the "second best" Spüler position is good enough maybe. I think we should think about Papageno's line! It seems very convincing. The most 6-men with only the white a-pawn I tried earlier were drawn. That's why I wanted to avoid giving the e-pawn. But in Papageno's line it seems to work quite well. His diagram position is won wherever you put the black queen on the board I think!
Maybe I'm on holiday for 5 days now, but then I will be back and ckeck your comments.

I want to draw your attention to a line that has been discussed in #141 and 142:
1. Nxf7 Qh4 2. Nd8 Qg5 3. Rxe6+ Kf8 4. Rf6+ Ke8 5. Nc6 Qf5+ 6. Kb7 Qb1+ 7. Kxa6 Kd7
You seemed to agree that the white king is misplaced or cut off. However, in my opinion, White has another dangerous winning plan here: He might just try to queen his a-pawn (with the help and protection by R and N) and even drop the e-pawn and g-pawn for this goal, say
8. Nxa7 Qd3+ 9. Nb5 Ke7 10. Rd6 Qe2 11. Kb6 Qxe5 12. a6+-

The judgement "white is winning" for the final position may seem bold at first sight. But we can look up the tablebases for a very similar position (dropping the pawn g2 from the final position in order to make it a 6-men).

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* White wins in 40 here.

I'm not claiming that this line is forced. My moves 8-12 are just meant to show another problem for the defending side.

Hello Mister Spüler,

first thank you for your interest and your good analysis!  I want to try maybe a better move after 4.Nc6: Qg4! avoiding your really tricky line 4....Qf5 5.Kd7! Kf7 6.Kc7!!

Ok lets try

4.Nc6                                    Qg4 (!)
5.Kd7 (Nd8 Qg7)                     Kf7
6.Nd8                                     Kf8
and now
a)7.Kc7 !                                 Qc4!
8.Rc6                                   Qg4! (not allowing the dangerous
                                                      Spülerplan. 8...Qd5? 9.Rf6 Ke8
                                                      10.Nc6! Qd7 11.Kb8 Qc7 12.Ka8!
and black seems to be in big
                                                      trouble, white simply pushes his
g-pawn; without the pawn on g2
the position would be a draw)
9.Rf6                                       Ke8
10.Rd6 (10.Nc6 Qc8!!)               Qg7
11.Kc8                                     Qg4
12.Kb7                                     Qb4
13.Kxa6                                   Qc4
14.Kxa7                                   Qc5 and black can hold the balance.

b)7.Kc8                                    Qg7(!)
  8.Nc6                                    Qg4!
  9.Nd8                                    Qg7
  10.Rf6                                   Ke8
  11.Rd6 (Nc6 Qc7!)                  Qg4
  12.Kb7                                  Qb4 leading to variation a)

As i told you i thought that 1.Nxf7 Qh4 must be ok for black because of the roughly material balance and blacks active queen simply trusting in my intuition ( and some really strong players and my dear friend Fritz11 agreed). I must confess that you looked much deeper in to the position and you are right that black is in real danger! When i started to analyze the position it was not easy to refute your idea. But i think the Queen is a very good piece and these variations have shown that black should be able to draw with real accurate play.
It would be interesting for me to hear the opinion of the forums Masters  ( Tony,Ruslan,Eric,Glenn,Richard,Mihail,David)?

Hello!
Please just ignore this (somewhat stupid) comment in #137! This is really ridiculous. I never meant it with arrogance. If it sounded so, I'm sorry, I'm not a native speaker. Please read my words only, not between them, ok? But I think that you like some discussion about your studies. Otherwise you would't have presented them in this forum but elsewhere where you're not assumed to response to comments I think. The position is full of subtilities, thats the reason why I didn't give concrete lines, but only a plan. But if you want to challenge me, we can try some lines:
Ok, indeed after
1.Nxf7   Qh4
2.Nd8    Qg5
3.Rxe6+  Kf8
A) 4.Rf6+   Ke8

A1)
5.Nc6    Qf5+! with the perpetual idea along the b1-h7 diagonal (b1,f5,h7) is very strong and after the try
6.Kb7    Qb1+
7.Kxa7  the white king is really misplaced and cut off along the b-file!

A2) The same problem seems to occur after
5.Rd6 (to cut off the black king along the d-file first) because of 5...Qg4+!
6.Kb7 Qb4+ attacks the a5-pawn.

B) This is the reason why I think in this particular case its better to deal with the pin after
4.Nc6!   Qf5
5.Kd7 and now:
a) 5...Qf7 6.Re7!
b) 5...Kf7 6.Kc7!
c) 5...Qg4 6.Kd6 and then Re7 and Kc7 and again White can reach his "dream position" (Kc7,Nc6,R goes to f6 or d6!, pawns e5 and a5 protected). Then play from the "dream position" starts with the double threat of pushing the e-pawn and collecting the a-pawns without becoming cut off with the king.
Hope I didn't overlook something important.
Anyway, it's a very interesting ending!  Smiley

Would you really bet I would never win this position against an engine? Even if this quesion is completely irrelevant, you should not go for this bet. I think I would win this in a corr game with some intensive work in a few weeks! Even if it would be draw theoretically the engines would make mistakes probably for sure.

Hello Mister Spüler,

one of the idea in the initial position is that 1.Nxf7 is not winning because of Qh4 which allows conterplay (many checks also to disrupt the coordination of the white pieces, sometimes perpetual and dont forget stalemate). This is a general consideration without any deep analysis. You say it´s pretty easy, but i bet you will never win this position against an engine. I must admit that i underestimated your idea and it causes black indeed trouble but i try to prove blacks chances with analysis. You think it does not matter what black plays i am not of this opinion. You need to play concrete moves to reach your dream theater (you seem neglecting the fact that black is also allowed to move). Ok i start with variation a).If  you refute it, i try to find something in b!
1.Nxf7                               Qh4
2.Nd8                              a)Qg5
3.Rxe6                               Kf8
4.Rf6 (Nc6 Qf5)                   Ke8
5.Nc6                                 Qf5!
6.Kb7                                 Qb1
7.Kxa7 (Kxa6)                     Kd7 please can you give in this variation a winning sequence (maybe you add exceptionally some moves? Please not soon i will take the last a pawn and sometimes i will have a new queen ) after which white has a clear winning position.

Dink,

You're right.  I should have considered more carefully whether my comment was appropriate coming from a moderator.  If it was a serious enough issue, I would have written a private note.  As the moderator, I should have just remained quiet.

This trend towards hyperactive moderation is getting ridiculous. Do you, SF, intend to upbraid people anytime you disagree with the tone or tenor of one of their remarks?! Please treat people like adults. This sort of heavy-handed moderation is a much greater threat to the integrity of the forum than the occasional pointed exchange.

I'm not particularly happy with the tone of this exchange.  It's perfectly reasonable to challenge anyone's analysis, but you seem to suggest that if another poster was a better player he would appreciate your winning idea.  This sort of arrogance isn't needed here.

By the way, I had a look at it for half an hour. Now I think 1.Nxf7 and 2.Nd8! wins too. And it is pretty easy. In every case of the 11 possibilities you proposed nearly the same manoeuvre wins for White! He will pick up the e6 pawn with his rook while avoiding pins, then he will put his knight on c6, maybe first his rook on f6 with ckeck, and then play one of the three possibilities a)put the rook on d6 and push the e-pawn or b) collect the black a-pawns or c) both a and b! Black has dozens of queen moves in every single move, but he can do absolutely nothing! And thats the reason why computers don't see it maybe. Too many black queen moves are possible to calculate them all, but the winning manoevre works in every case I think. (Meantime I ckecked your ...Qxg2 Fritz position with my computer and he says about +4 after 5 minutes and this is increasing with the time - seems far from equal!). Ask your IMs or GMs what they do against my winning manoevre.  Cheesy

Hello,
I think you misunderstood me. I do believe that you considered 1.Nxf7. Of course I do. I also wondered why there is a black pawn on a6 and not a white one without the one on a5. And I dind't say "1.Nxf7 is also a forced analytical win". I only said that the position after 1.Nxf7 Qh4 2.Nd8 Qc4+ 3.Rc6 Qd5 4.Rxe6+ Kf8 5.Rf6+ Ke8 6.Nc6 (or after 5...Kg7) is maybe won and I think it is. And I don't make a huge analysis now. Maybe some day, but not now. I said I enjoy your studies. I don't want to refute them. But I don't see a clear way for Black to hold after 1.Nxf7 and 2.Nd8. It's not my job to prove another white win, it's yours to prove the draw for Black (but only if you want to prove the correctness of your study in this term). Maybe there are too many possibilities... - and this is one reason why we also like the game, isn't it? Some studies are very beautiful and their correctness will never be proven and they will never be refuted! The point is, you don't see a clear path for Black after 1.Nxf7 and 2.Nd8 to hold, do you? This is all I asked about.  Wink

[quote author=Amann link=1226434702/120#134 date=1250897612]Hello,

you can belive me that i considered the possibility of 1.Nxf7!
This move was the reason why i added black an additional pawn on a6 ( i don`t like to add some pieces in a studies witout a reason) instead of a white pawn on a6 and black pawn on a7  to secure black enough chances of counterplay in this line. I think it´s enough, Fritz 11 thinks it´s enough and some strong players ( IM and GM) which i showed the
study are also of the same opinion.

Ok, you say 1.Nxf7 is also a forced analytical win which would refute the whole study of course.
Please can you prove your opinion in the following lines:
1.Nxf7         Kf8

1.Nxf7         Qh4
2.Nd8          a)Qg5
                 b)Qg4
                 c)Qg3
                 d)Qb4
                 e)Qa4
                 f)Qe4
                 g)Qe1
                 h)Qh7
                 i)Qh5
                 j)Qc4

If you can show an analytical forced win  in these lines with clear variations and a clear winning positon for white (not white is better and  has good winning chances) the study is refuted.

This shows again a situation in which one should really not trust computers. "Equal" is ridiculous. It's obvious that White is better. The question is wheather it's enough for a win or not.

Maybe one can "prove" a win with some analysis! Why not? The question wheater 1.Nxf7 wins or not seems not to be of interest to you. Ok, now we know your definition of "study". This is quite ok, but some people require a unique solution for a "study". If 1.Nxf7 wins, this puzzle would not be a "study" in their sense. But anyway, the 1.Nh7-solution of the puzzle/study/whatever-you-call-it  is very nice!  Wink

I feel bad for non-chess players who never get to experience this kind of beauty.

Not sure, though, if it makes any difference whether White plays 3.Ke2 or 3.Rh1 first, though. I can't see what Black can do to avoid the main line in either case.

Fritz suggests
5.Rf6 Kg7
6.Nc6 Qxg2 as equal.

But these Variations are by no means forced. Black has several other Queenmoves instead of 2... Qc4 or 3...Qd5 and maybe 1...Kf8 is also good enough. Generally i think that Balck has enough counterplay if he manages to bring out his queen but you are right that white can try to play for a win given it would be a tournamentgame. But i am sure that you can not prove a forced win for white in this variation. The stipulation of the study is white to move and win (forced variation with a clear result at the end)and not white to move and get some winning chances! Wink

Hello,

1.Nxf7           Qh4! ( maybe Kf8 is also good enough, but i think it´s
better to bring the queen in to the game at
                              once)
2.Nd8!           Qc4! (according to Fritz 11 other moves are also
                           possible to maintain the balance)
3.Rc6            Qd5
4.Rxe6           Kf8
5.Rxa6           Qxe5
6.Rxa7           Qc5 draw

No, not giving the e-pawn away! I thought 1.Nxf7 Qh4 2.Nd8! Qc4+ 3.Rc6 and after your 3...Qd5 4.Rxe6+ Kf8 I suggest 5.Rf6+! Ke8 6.Nc6!. Look how they protect each other (R,N,pawn e5 and a5 ist protected too). Maybe White can win this. I think he can, but I'm not completely sure.

Hmm, I think 1.Rf5 draws.

1...Kh6 2.Kd2 and White can protect everything.

1...Kh4 2.Kd2 same as above

1...Kg4 Rf3 and everything is protected.

Hi Günter!
I like the one in #105. When I found the solution 1.Nh7 f6 2.Ng5 I thought thats it. But how can I see clearly that there is no win possible after 1.Nxf7 and 2.Nd8! to pick up all black kingside pawns and play continues?
The next I will try is #114 - the third Amann-12-men in a row! Wow!

Ok your beginning was naturual and correct:

1.Bc2                                                  cxd3
2.Bxd3                                                 Rd7!
3.Bf6! (winning the last black pawn)        Kxf6
4.Rxf4                                                  Kg5

The problem now for white is not his material disadvantage but the bad placement of his pieces. How can he save the game?

Alternatively, 3...Kg1 4.Nd2 and now that White's pawn is on h4, Black can't reach it. 3.Kf7? Kg1! looks like a draw, though.

No.

In this line Black Queens and plays Kg2. Either the h pawn goes, or the g pawn Queens. But now you start to see what a hard time the 2 Knights have vs.  2 connected passed pawns, unlike the slick Rook  Cool

I have no idea at all how to solve Gunter's puzzle Sad. I tried both Bc2 cxd3 Bxd3 Rd7 and d4+ Bxd4 B-anywhere Rd7. I suspect it has something to do with the second line and with the placement of the bishop, but I can't seem to get anything so far Sad

As for JEH's first puzzle, I did it before, so I shall not attempt to solve it XD.

As for the 2 knight's puzzle by JEH, I think that White should play

1.Ne3

1...Kxh2 2.gxh4 and wins

1...gxh3 2.Nef1. Then the white king marches to h3 when the black king is on h1, then Ng3 and Nf3 mate.

1...g3 2.Nhg4 I think all the pawns are going to get caught, and White can push his h-pawn down to victory.

Is my answer correct? Also, can I have a clue for Gunter's puzzle? Smiley

Dont think to artifical at the beginning, just consider natural and  logical moves (the same you would play in a  real game) to reach the critical position of the study.

After 1.Nh7    f6!
2.Nxf6   Black has the already mentioned stalematedefense Kf8
       3.Rd8    Kg7
       4.Rd7    Kh8!

Thats one idea of the study; if you read carefully all posts, the solution becomes clear!

Apparently not! I saw there is a stalemate after all in the line: 1. Nh6 f6! 2. Nxf6+ Kf8 3. Rd8+ Kg7 4. Rd7 Kh8!!

And 1. Nh6 f6! 2. Nf8 KxNf8 3. Rd8+ QxRd8 wins for Black.

this seems a hard nut to crack.. Sad

1. Nf3 Kf8 2. Rd7 Qc5+ and the Queen breaks loose.

1. Nxf7 Kf8 2. Rd8+ Kg7 3. Rd7 Qc5+ is again possible.

on 1. Ne4 Kf8 I see nothing for White..

So far I prefer (spoilers):

1. Nh6 Qh4 2. Nf6+Kf8 3. Rd8+ Kg7 4. Rg8+ Kh6 5. Rh8+ Kg5 6. RxQh4 KxRh4 and now 7. g4 or 7. Nd7 (amongst other moves) seems to win.
1. Nh6 f5 or f6 2. N(x)f6+ and now the Queen is lost to Rd8+/Rd7, while the f-pawn cannot queen.
Finally, 1. Nh6 Qd7+ or 1. Nh6 Qh4 2. Nf6+ QxNf6 3. exQf6 do not lead to a stalemate. 1. Nh6 QxRd6 2. exQd6 promotes.

Close? Huh

I tried all kinds of random knight moves (Nh7, Ne4, Nf7! (you dont lose your knight), but finally settled for Nf3, controlling h4 and g5 and trapping the queen.

1.Nf3

Then I got really excited. Kf8 is met by Rd7 Qe8 Rd8, and f5 is met by Nd4 Qh7 Rd8 Ke7 Rd7.

However, there is f6. Nd4 now does not work due to fxe5 Rxe6 exd4 Rxe7 Kxe7, and Black wins. After some thinking, I finally found:

Ng5!

And now fxe5 does not work due to Rxe6 and now the white knight is not lost.

fxg5 g4!

Now the queen has to move on the 7th rank, and then White can play Rd8 and Rd7 winning the queen.

Is this correct?

Solution to the previous study:

3.b5!!    Rb8
4.Kxa7  Rh8

quite simple study but a nice motive to remember.

I think I got it (you can never be so sure about these studies though!). And a note: I too prefer studies with a 'real game' flavour!

Caveat: Spoilers follow:

Not 100% if some 'souldering' is needed in the end, I calculated that the White King is able to cover first the queening-square anyway. Or am I wrong?

I like this sort of puzzle best; it combines real, usable endgame knowledge with the extra challenge of finding a series of only moves to reach the draw.

Nice choice, Gunter!

I didn't get the last one.  In fact, it took me a few seconds to verify that Be7 was truly mate!  Wow, what a beautifully conceived puzzle.

Thanks again, Gunter!

Yes, another nice one and not too hard to solve comfortably. The finish is similar to #6.

Gunter, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the creative process. It all seems a bit like magic to me, which I suppose is the whole point!

Gunter,

I like this one! It almost feels like a game, and it has a bunch of false leads.  I haven't cracked it yet, but I will think about it until I drift off to sleep.  Thanks!

Very nice, Gunter  Smiley

Would you mind briefly sketching the process by which you compose such a study. It would certainly be interesting to understand how a study composer goes about his work.

If i have discovered a study-like position i try to add some more (hidden) moves (in ideal case no captures or checks) to reach the heart of the study and keep an (almost) game-like charakter .This can be very difficult or sometimes even impossible. In this example the move 3.Nd4 is very hard to find and white has some natural possibilities to go wrong. Unfortuntately no black piece (bishop or knight) makes one single move in the mainline which is a big handicap (this is one of my first studies, today i try it to make better).

In some composing tournaments the mainline of the study must contain a given stipulation. Let´s take the last team worldchampionship:

Section D: Studies
Judges: Belarus, Finland, Georgia, Israel, Romania
Reserve judge: Belgium

In a position in the main line of a win or draw study where an unprotected white or black piece A is directly attacked, White or Black instantaneously (right on the following move) places another piece B (of the same colour as A) en-prise (again unprotected and directly attacked). This thematic move resulting in the two white or the two black pieces A & B hanging, must be a quiet one, i.e. not a check, nor a capture. A and B may be any pieces except pawns.

Example:

G. Kasparian
1 Pr Magyar Sakkelet 1969

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Draw (4+2) 1. Kg4! Qc8+ 2.Kf3!! (2.Kh4 Qf8!) Qb7+
3. Rd5!! (thematic!) Q:b1 4.Ra5+ Kb7
5.Rb5+ Draw.

Maybe somebody wants to make a try to comopse a position which contains the required theme ?  Smiley

And what happens after 1..Nxf3?

I can only see winning rook for pawn, picking up pawn, then mating with Knight & Bishop.

But then I'm rubbish at studies!

Gunter,

Please don't tell us the answer until after the weekend!

I know the pawn on c4 has to be significant, but I haven't figured out quite why yet.

(Oh, and thanks for the Smyslov study!)

That must be it. I missed 3...Rg8, so I kept trying to find out why my solution seemed so simple... Roll Eyes Again, an amazing final position! Shocked Can't remember to have seen that kind of dominance in a pure rook ending position.

Black can also play strong moves not only white!

This time one cannot go wrong, cause it's all forced...

1.Bh5 Bd6 2.Rxf7#  Grin

... but what happens really after 1.Bh5 - it's a simple double attack (f7,g3) - let's say: 1...Bc7 2.Rf7 Kd6 3.Rf6!

OK Black can also go back to d8 with the king - this leads to a forced loss by zugzwang: 1.Bh5 Bxc7 2.Rxf7+ Kd8 3.Rxc7 Rg8 4.Rc4 Rg5+ 5.Ke6 Rxh5 6.h4

Black to play an lose! Anyway you dont have to foresee this, cause it's coming natural as there is no other starting move than 1.Bh5.

Yes, that's the position. Not to forget the important sideline 4...g6 5.Nxg6+ Kxf7 6.Nf4, when White's lengthy manoeuvres have helped him move his king from h5 to h7 (so that 6...Nxf4 is no longer with check) before Black had the time to play ...Bb8!

Yes.

1 Nh8 Kg8
2 f7+ Kf8
3 Kg6 a2
4 Kh7 a1 (Q)... Black is a Queen up at this point, and White still has a bit to do to close the net.

originally here I wanted to play 5 Bb4 ch Nxb4, 6 g6 but then 6...Qh1 wins...which leads to:

5 g6 Qh1
6 Bh6! and this position is really incredible...(no escape offered by 6...Ke7, 7 Bg5+)

Ok

Lets try:

1. Bd5          Qxg7
2. Bc6          Kb4
3. c3            Kxc4  [Kb3 4. Nd2 Ka2 5. Bd5 Ka1 6. Nb3 Ka2 7. Nd4 Ka1
                             8. Nc2 checkmate]
4. Kc2          Qxc3
5. bxc  stalemate

Any ideas to improve this variation?

And what a lovely likeness it is too!  Cool

I really enjoyed the last puzzle even though I didn't get it despite knowing that the key lay in a stalemate position.

I look forward to banging my head against this one too!

incredible study; small hint: ask yourself, where to put the black queen to stalemate the white king.

Ok,

So far I'm stuck even for candidate moves.  I'm guessing that the main theme will be a stalemate (only because I have a vague recollection of this), but I don't see how to force black to take or block the pawn.  I hope you give us some time to work on this one, Gunter!

I still love these puzzles, with the one caveat that some of them don't feel particularly realistic.

Thanks for providing these!

(Sorry, like Polonius, I am too longwinded to be good at poetry.)

NB: The only modification was grammatical.

Gunter,

You're right, this is quite a bit more tricky than the standard winning positions.

But since I was lucky enough to have Batsford Chess Endings right next to me when I saw your post, I thought this exception would be relatively well known. (The position you gave is "KP 16a", part of a 1932 Grigoriev study.)  However, it isn't in Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual , the book.  I didn't check his CD.

Even BCE, with Speelman as the main author, gives the solution four exclamation marks in total, and you're right, the idea is very difficult to find unless you have seen it before.

I still love these!

Btw: for everyone else: 1.Qa3? is probably the most obvious try, but:  1...Kd2 2.Qa2 Kc3! (better than 2...Kd1? 3.Ke4 c1(Q) 4.Kd3 +-) 3.Qa3 Kd2=.

This is very surprising for me.
According to theory, the white king must be on d5,e4,f4 or g4 ?
Here the white king is on e5  and therefore it should be a draw, but the black king is also misplaced on d3.
I think this positon is   quite tricky?

4.Qxb6!! winning

"Applause" - It's easy to see that 4...ab6 is losing to 5.Nd8, but I wonder if anyone here would recognize in a real played game, that 4...Kb6 is answered by 5.a5 and Black can choose between parting with his queen or mate. Real nice and surprising.

Hi John,

composers try to hide the solution and even strong chessmasters like you (or in some cases even computerprogramms) cant find the complete solution from the initialposition. But there are many gamelike studies which show pretty ideas in (seemingly) clear positions with few pieces.
I think they are useful and fun for every tournament player. I hope you like (i am sure you solve) the next study.

Solution to te previous study:

1. Rg7!             Kf3
2. Rc7              Rh5
3. Kd4              Rc5
4. Rxc5             bxc
5. Kd3!             b1 Q (R) stalemate

Gunter, thanks for these. Personally I liked the last one because it isn't often I see a study I can actually solve. That's the advantage of studies from that era to my mind. Once they get hard rather than pretty I lose interest; feeble-minded of me, no doubt.

That ending is quite cute, but the dearth of plausible alternatives does rather nudge one towards the solution.

Well, maybe that's just a quibble; not sure if that is considered a major drawback among study afficionados?

I enjoyed the last Knight puzzle.  It was very similar to (or perhaps even the same as) an old puzzle I remember from years ago.

This Rook ending seems trivially easy, which means I must be missing something major.

Yep, I missed something major!  1.Rc7?? Rh5+ followed by 2...Rc5 ruins white's Christmas, which means there may be only one other way to slow down the pawn from queening.

That's very nice, and pretty tough!
Quite naturalistic setting too...

Very nice ending; I had a lot of fun solving it.  Smiley
Must say, it took me quite some time , even though it is all quite logical.

Ask yourself a more interesting question: what would you play as Black after 1 Kb7?

I would say Kb7-Kc8 since the others fail and this is the only thing that will bother the knigget. Though I cold be wrong.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Thanks for so many interest and nice replies! I want to show some real nice practical studies here as a chesspuzzle. The solution will follow one week later. I hope many chessfriends enjoy the nice ideas in the positions.

Since you are a study composer, I would welcome some of your own studies here as well!
