Latest Scandal at Aeroflot.

GM accused of cheating by a super-GM opponent in R6:
Chessvibes broke the story first: http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/mamedyarov-accuses-opponent-of-cheating-withdr...
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5232

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. f3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. e4 Nb6 6. Nc3 Bg7 7. Be3 O-O 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. O-O-O f5 10. h4 fxe4 11. h5 gxh5 12. d5 Ne5 13. Bh6 Nec4 14. Qg5 Rf7 15. Bxc4 Nxc4 16. Rd4 Qd6 17. Bxg7 Rxg7 18. Qxh5 Qf4+ 19. Kb1 Bf5 20. fxe4 Bg4 21. Nge2 Qd2 0-1

This is really fit an opening forum: can anyone tell if B would play the above moves if you ar 2600 Elo?

Perhaps  thibdb13 can shed some light?

Going back to one of my earlier post (http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1229096002), it is almost impossible to prove someone is cheating with a handheld unless caught red-handed or if there is a search.

I was not present when it happened (I plaid - very badly - in the C tournament which was held during the morning while the A1 and A2 were plaid in the afternoon).
Now to be honnest, I do not think Kurnosov did cheat (even if he did not play so good at the end of the tournament / after the conflict):
- many players were leaving their place after playing their move and went to the hall to smoke a cigarette. Kurnosov was not the only one to do this
- each "smoking" player looks at the other ones in the hall and it would be very difficult to start trying to use Rybka in such circumstances
- you could go to the toilets to use Rybka, but doing this after each move would have been seen by a lot of people and the arbiter would have noticed it without any problem.
- you could also try to go to your room. The problem is the rooms for the players were on the other side of the hotel complex where the tournament was held. I needed once to go to my room (because of having left my lighter there) and it took me about 8 minutes to get there and come back. If Kurnosov did so after each move, it would have been noticed by the arbiters AND he would have lost very soon on time.

I do not say it was impossible to cheat but the circumstances were not really favorable for this type of behaviour...

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Seems that tournament organisers would be advised to introduce anti-computer checks/searching  to avoid suspicion.

Some recommendations?...

1. don't miss the opening ceremony !
2. be sure to know what you do if you open your door to people knocking after midnight...
3. play for your life against other westerners, because it's going to be tough with the Russians. Expect from them : little theory but mainline openings, "active positional" play, and rather losing an exchange than a pawn for nothing.

Don't know if you are familiar with Usagi Yojimbo, a great comic series by Stan Sakai featuring a rabbit-like samurai in ancient Japan.
In one strip there is young Usagi going to fight for his first big tournament, coached by his master. The scene goes :

Master  :  - Do you remember what i taught you ?
Student : - Yes, only honour matters. victory is unimportant.
Master  : - Good. and if you lose ?
Student : - You'll beat me into mulch.
master  : - Good. You learnt well.

Try to keep the spirit !
