It might be too great a risk to play it against super GMs like Anand or the company, though, but I rather believe it's quite playable at a less sophisticated level. And it's fun to! Incidentally, I wasn't able to win in it as White in correspondence chess when I was still into it.
Words are nice, but variations are nicer
Please show an improvement to the Negi game (18...Qc7 19.a4)
Well, I have spent some time analysing the game proper and have found some improvement, I think. Here's the analysis.
I think Black should have tried 17... Qxa2!? with the possible lines:
18. c4 Bxe4 19. fxg7 Bxg7 20. Qxe4 h6 21. cxb5 (21.Ne5!? Bxe5 22. Qxe5 O-O 23. Rb2 Qa3 24. Rf3 Qa1+ 25. Bf1 Rfd8 26. Rg3+ Kf8 27.
Qg7+ Ke7 28. Rf3 Rf8 29. cxb5 axb5 30. Rf6 Rd1 31. Rbf2 Qd4+=) 21... O-O 22. Bd3 f5!? (22... Rxd3?! 23. Qxd3 axb5 24. Qxb5 Qa7+ 25. Kh1 Nd7 26. Qc6 Nc5 27. Rfd1 Qa3+/=) 23. Qc4 Qxc4 24. Bxc4 Rd6 25. Rfd1 Rxd1+ 26. Rxd1 axb5 27.Bxe6+ Kh7 28. Rd5 b4 29. Bxf5+ Kg8 30. Rb5 Na6 31. Bd3 Rc8 32. Be4 Bf8=
I didn't find any decisive advantage for White, but, on the other hand, Black has to defend thoroughly all the way. May be, that is why it's not so much playable on the pro-level. Who would like to make 20 good moves just to save the game after hard defence?! So the Poisonous Pawn Variation must be much safer to play instead.
