It might be mentioned that several GMs (e.g. Cheparinov, Epishin, Milov) have played 6. g4 after 5...Bd6.

Thanks for your response TN.

Will take another look at that SOS article. Remember trying it out in some rapid games - but quickly loosing faith in it.

As I see it now, I am afraid the same thing will happen with the latvian, as it can be avoided using a simple healthy move order trick without any consequences.

After 5...Bd6, if you want to avoid the Meran and the 6.Qc2 Bd6 7.Bd3/e2 variation, then the strongest options seem to be either 6.Ne5 (angling for an improved version of the 5...Nbd7 6.Ne5 SOS) or playing 6.c5 Bc7 7.b4. I would choose 6.Ne5, since after 6.c5 Bc7 7.b4 Black can play 7...Nbd7 8.Be2 e5 which looks approximately equal.

All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them.

Got the ebook on Chris Ward's Play the queens gambit, where he recommends the latvian. 7.g4!?

After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.e3 Nf6 5.Nf3 he says:
"Although Black could now conceivably play 5...Bd6, it is eceedingly rare and unlikely to be of independent significance."

Can't black avoid the latvian all together with 5...Bd6!? 6.Qc2 0-0
Huh

Dont have other sources that mention this move order. How does white handle this possibility - if he intend to play the latvian against the semi slav?
