In the attached PGN file, I present a position from page 367. The position is not very difficult, but I am not sure if I like it.
What should Black play for? (The authors, as always, conclude their explanations way too early and give very few sample games.)

I definitely recall reading in the book what is offered on 3.a3. But now I just can't find it...

Given that COBE, 1st edition only provided a footnote's worth of coverage on 3.g3, I would assume that the 2nd edition would not even mention 3.a3 (please correct me if I am incorrect). In any event, 3...d5 is a good reply, when the position is very similar to 1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 c5 3.e3, with colours reversed. In that instance, 3...a6 would not be a useful move for Black, as any Bb5 ideas are completely innocuous.

Incidentally, I was going through some old Checkpoint reviews by Carsten Hansen and found he highly praised both the Black and White editions ... (and Hansen is no John Elburg)

Just got the book today. I rather appreciated the first edition but was more than disappointed with the new one. The advertising blurb announcing dozens (or wasn't it hundreds ? ) of changes is just plain lying, especially if you consider the fact most of the updating concerns the sicilian (some of it being of interest by the way)! Non-Dragon fans should just stay away from this book, all the more so if they already own the first edition. Angry

But some useful stuff on the Accelerated?

Edited for ambiguity.

Yes, I always appreciate a healthy degree of ambiguity.

But seriously, thanks for your opinion of this book.  On your advice, I'll save my money.

But there must be even worse around .....

Well, last year I was in one book shop (a Borders, I think) that distinguished "Chess books" and "Eric Schiller".  Shocked

Yes, afterall, the Catalan is such a non critical opening, why waste more than one page on it eh?  Shocked

Having spent more time on this book, I am ready to give it away. I simply cannot imagine, but if this book is so much better than Chess Openings for White, Explained, then the latter must have been an utter piece of #*&@. This is without a doubt the most shallow and inadequate opening book I have even bought.   Angry

COfW,E, from the sections I have seen (Caro-Kann, Sicilian GPA and the Open Games), indeed was an utter piece of ...... But there must be even worse around .....

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Hi,
I have worked a little bit with the new edition...- in my eyes you should not buy it, if you have already the first one. There are only few changes, which you can do by yourself, if you look up new games in the openings in question...
The moveorder 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 they give now 1 page und you know what that in their books means....
They say you can become a member at ChessOpeningsExplained.com.....

greetings

Where do you find that 1 page on the Catalan? I can't find anything at all.  Angry
