Hi,
I have worked a little bit with the new edition...- in my eyes you should not buy it, if you have already the first one. There are only few changes, which you can do by yourself, if you look up new games in the openings in question...
The moveorder 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 they give now 1 page und you know what that in their books means....
They say you can become a member at ChessOpeningsExplained.com.....

Does your advice apply mainly to the 1.e4 section, the 1.d4 section or to both?

Hi,
....really to all sections....

According to the author's (sic): "This new edition incorporates literally hundreds of changes." On the other hand: "The vast majority of the recommendations in the 2005 edition fully stood the test of time."

However, I must say I was fairly pleased with the first edition and will seriously consider getting the second (from what I can gather, the Black repertoire is much better than their White version, although I do not have the latter so cannot give a personal opinion).

That's for sure. One weakness with the first edition was that it did not address the Catalan move order, namely: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3!? considering the popularity of the Cat these days, such an ommission was a big boo boo which I hope they corrected this time around.

After mixed reviews, I never bothered to buy the first edition. But there is a new and presumably improved second edition out now. I am thinking of getting primarily  for the  the coverage of the Bogo and to a lesser extent, the Nimzo.

Anyone with the new edition care to share any thoughts?

Well, I went ahead and bought it. I just received my copy. I have not spent enough time with it to give a thorough assessment.  My fist impression was positive since  looks just like my Pirc Alert, which is one of my all time favourite opening books. However my next impression was  that it appears to be a very shallow book - large font, small pages, diagrams galore, lots of glamour and glitz, but short of real meat. I am disappointed.  Sad

Hi.

A little more information picked from the chess shop at the Jeremy Silman site

"
This is the second, updated and fully revised edition of Chess Openings for Black, Explained. This new edition incorporates literally hundreds of changes, reflecting all relevant opening novelties and the author's ongoing research in the three and a half years since the publication of the first edition. The vast majority of the recommendations in the 2005 edition fully stood the test of time. The few that didn't have been improved or replaced in this 2009 work. What's more, we give you a number of interesting alternatives not discussed in earlier editions.

Here are just some major examples: In the Accelerated Dragon, we make some important corrections regarding the move 7. f3 (p.61). also, after 9. 0-0 (p. 64), we discuss White's recent successes in the 9... d6 10. Ndb5 line--and two promising alternatives for Black to 9... d6. In 'Defending against 4. Qxd4" (p. 110), we introduce a new, more promising line for black. We fine-tune a number of our recommendations against the Maroczy Bind. we take note of White's improvements in the Alapin (p. 223)-- and ways to counter it. We discuss how to play after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 against rare (but tricky) third moves, such as 3. g3 and 3. a3. And there are many more updates.

Cheers / Anders

Ps.
Adding coverage of 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 is good as that was missing in the suggested repertoire.

No specific info mentioned about the Bogo-indian though.

Hi,
when will this book be available in Europe?
Thanks in advance!

Can anyone post how many changes they really did? Black repertoire is quite good, but white one was VERY BAD! So I'm interested in updated white edition also..

I haven't been able to find any information about this book on the Net; can you provide a link with more information about the book?
