I would propose NID and QID or Bogo depending on your style.
Playing KID requires a lot of work and knowledge. At least you should be prepared against four pawn attack, exchange variation, h3 ssytem and various systems in classical variation.
Playing Nimzo and QID/Bogo is more easy for learning.

How about using a mix of the ...a6 slav and the benko gambit?

Just a thought... solidity and something to make the opponent work a little for a 1-0 result?

I was going over Avrukh's treatment of the QGA yesterday, comparing it to Rizzitano's and Chess Stars', and he seems to deal it a very heavy blow.  So I'm not sure if I would bother avoiding it as White.  I'll be interested to see how practice pans out in view of the apparently very strong recommendations of Avrukh.

vs.     1.d4

A. The more risky option : 1...Nf6 Kings Indian (Very funny to play and always keeps the game in a fighting mood. Rather risky as it gives white such a free hand though). A good winning try.

B. The Solid option : 1...d5  Queens Gambit accepted. (Very Solid and sound). Good to play for the win with the draw in hand.

Then your repertoire includes an opening when you try more for the win and one opening where you play it more safe. You chose one of these openings depending on who you face and if you HAVE to win or if a draw could be OK.

Go CAVS ! ! !

Played through a couple dozen games from the King's Indian Battle Plans book, in the past couple nights.

So far, it feels more natural than the Grunfeld or QID.....we'll see.

The KID is an interesting choice, but requires a great deal of work to play well in my opinion. Even the best KID player ever, Kasparov (purely my opinon), said it was very difficult. There are a lot of variations, a lot of weird, unintuitive moves, and a lot of theory! All the variations have a somewhat different character, etc...

The Grunfeld also has a lot of theory, but has a more forcing, open character in my opinion. The drawing variations can be avoided, and you can always find less mainstream options that are still okay for Black. I like the Grunfeld just as much as the KID, it just depends on my mood.

PS - Nice to see another Clevelander on ChessPub. Cheers!  Grin

KID is the only universal defence, but a lot of theory and an exchange variation.
If you play the nimzo, you have to know also QID, Catalan and Symmetrical English.
In the Gruenfeld there is a lot of theory,  the anti gruenfeld after 1.c4 or 1.Nf3, black gruenfeld players on top level generally favour not to enter it and play a different opening.

I'd like to stay with an Indian system.
Just a preference back to college days.

Thanks

Long live the King.
Sounds more to my liking.

Any variants that you play specifically ?

Nimzo is safer...Less risk = Less reward, nevertheless a very sensible choice when your opponents allow you to get it in.

Gruenfeld is reputed to have many forced drawing lines, but as a non adherent I cannot confirm or deny this.

KID is strategically risky but tactically deadly. Mate white a few times and your'e probably hooked for life. Another plus is that your opponents can't run and hide once they commit to 1d4 2c4, instead they must stand and fight like men (or some women).  Tongue

Probably the Queen's ID.

Any specific theme to the Nimzo that makes you prefer it ?

Thanks

I would recommend the Nimzo-Indian over the KID and Grunfeld, but it is entirely a matter of taste. You can pick up an Informant and play through some of the games in each system, and decide which positions you like the best. Also, the games in the Informant are annotated, making them more instructive.

This thread probably belongs in the 'General Chess' section, although it shouldn't make much difference in any case.

Also, in the Nimzo, do you intend to meet 3.Nf3 with the Queen's Indian, Bogo-Indian or something else?
