Dragan Glas: thanks for the suggestions. I've meant to buy Polugaevsky's book for a while now; looks like it's time.

I've had a little bit of success going through strategy books, etc -- but not as much as I'd hoped. Will keep looking.

Viking: thanks for pointing me to that thread. I read it at the time and completely forgot about it. As for Ravikumar's book, I saw a copy on eBay about a year ago and am still kicking myself for not buying it.

Greetings,

Maturin13
J'm not aware of any specific collection of his games, apart from those at Chessbase - but these aren't annotated, I believe.

The Wikipedia article on him has some interesting information on his style as well as links to various sources.

The only other hope is to find mention of him in non-English books or collections of other players' games.

Lev Polugayevski featured one of his games in the introduction to his book, The Art of Defence in Chess, for which Andersson won a prize. His level of aggression in chess, in keeping with his minimalist style, was once described as "going for your big toe"!

Sorry I don't have any more information for you - perhaps some of our Scandinavian friends can help!?

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Question for the forum: where can I find annotated games in which Ulf Andersson plays Black?

Any endgame strategy book has a number of his wins as White from, say, the Catalan or QID. I've played through lots of those; now I've become curious as to how he played as Black.

There are some Symmetrical English games in Suba's Hedgehog book. But I can only think of one source that has annotated games against 1.e4 or 1.d4 — Kopec and Pritchett's _Chess World Title Contenders and their Styles_, which has four games with Ulf as Black.

I've played over some of his Black wins (and draws — lots of those) in a database. There are some recurring themes -- for example,  I've found that Ulf often goes into an endgame with a slightly worse position and sacrifices a pawn for greater piece (esp. rook) activity and a relatively easy draw. And in the late middlegame he often essays Petrosian-like defensive exchange sacrifices, again mostly for activity. In short, he does anything but retreat into a defensive shell.

But these are bare game scores — would like to have some master annotations to look at and compare my impressions.

Any suggestions are welcome — thank you.
