Strange that my favorite artists and records are not mentioned yet:

Lou Reed: New York

Van Morrisson: Live at San Francisco (or any other live record)

J. S. Bach: Magnificat (I know xmas is over, but don´t care)
G. Mahler: 2., 5. Symphony

If you try, you may lose. If you don´t try, you have lost.

I am gonna try that - I am also a sucker for the Kronos Quartet playing Purple Haze.
You being Norwegian, you're not going to tell me you don't know at least two versions of Grieg's monster hit, do you?

Apocalyptica is my favourite - a "cello metal" band.
Probably most famous for playing Metallica with cellos only.

Some of my favorite songs:
Death zone
Harmageddon
Seeman (-even some lyrics here)
Hall of the Mountain King (- although quite a different version than what Mnb proposed, I guess  Smiley)

I stand corrected.  It might be all those drugz from the sixties still in my system.   Wink

Just kidding, Kidz!

mnb:  What category do you put Orbison, Dylan, Birds?

Pop?  Just wondering.

Pop, folk, popfolk, folkpop, whavever you like.

drkodos wrote on 01/11/09 at 00:10:56:

Also:  Page & Plant stole too much music (so many other did too!) for my tastes.  Plus, I actually like the minimalistic Willie Dixon and think he does it better!  Their own revelations (The Zep boyz) that they knew the songs were written by others but they choose to not put the correct songwriter credits on the original album is still a bit irksome to some.  Count me in on that camp.

Me too, but I still think Led Zep recorded some very well constructed arrangements. I am not a minimalist on principle. You see, besides the financial issue, on which the LZ-boys simply were wrong, the ethical side is controversial. The romantic idea that a piece of art should be entirely original stems from the 19th century, since when a composer (or painter or author) preferably should suffer from grave poverty plus tuberculosis, while living in a moist attic or cellar. Between the attacks of illness our composer writes down feverishly one brilliant piece of work after another. Of course he dies around 30. Only then his genius is discovered, so that all the admirers can mourn about the works our composer had not the time to record.
According to those admirers its only an unevenness that those geniuses rather had the bad taste to die from syphilis (Schubert) or heroin addiction (Hendrix, Morrison), but that does not prevent them from attributing their favourite genius a divine status.
Now the hard truth is that composing music is 99% sweat and 1% inspiration. Another hard truth is that before that romantic ideal of originality became in vogue composers stole unscrupulously. So if Led Zep stole too much to your taste, you condemn a great part of classical music as well.

drkodos wrote on 01/11/09 at 00:10:56:

Don't get me started on Lennon because the weepy eyed adoring fans of that "borrower" refuse to let the facts stand.  No doubt he wrote some catchy tunes, but too many were "borrowed," for me to have him in my own HoF.

Lennon is vastly overrated as a composer. While I admit that McCartney has lost something essential after the Beatles fell apart, it is obvious Lennon has lost even more. His fans, like those of Dylan, confuse music with poetry.

As for sound, well, Led Zep absolutely blew people away!! Until! The Doors busted out a bit later, that is, and with music that was a bit more original too.

When was The Doors' debut released again? And when Led Zep's? I am afraid you have got your chronology wrong. You have got my thoughts on originality already; I don't give a s**t. Let me add that all instrumental sections of The Doors don't blow me away, but blow me into sleep. Boooring. The melodies of The Doors are certainly catchy, but development is always zero and the songs are usually structured predictably by ABABCAB (A = verse; B = chorus). Arrangements are poor; uninteresting bass lines and drum patterns. The famous exception is Show me the way to the next whisky bar (I never can remember the real title), which typically is composed by Kurt Weill (and the original is superior).
The Doors is the voice of Morrison and hardly more. That is - to my standards - not enough for good music.

Those who enjoy minimalism: try the Viola Sonata from Sjostakovitsj (1974, so contemporary music!). The first bars are played on open strings. Then you will learn that minimalism and standstill are not the same.

PS You have named some excellent female voices - but again, one voice does not make good music. I want all the instruments contribute to the composition; that's why I turn The Doors, AC/DC and U2 down. Concentrating on the bass will reveal my point.

@HgMan and OstapBender:

Lots of bands there I've never even heard of! I can't wait to search it out and find out what golden nuggets you have in store for me Smiley

A few years ago I tried listening to all I could find of Tom Petty on Youtube, but I didn't really get it. To my ear most of his melodies were too simple/boring, and the lyrics not great enough to compensate for that... what am I missing? I must admit I had the same attitude to Springsteen, until I bought "The Essential Bruce Springsteen" cheap and played it a number of times; basically I brainwashed myself into liking him.

I quite like what I've heard of Green Day, though it's limited to the most well-known hits.

Re women in rock:
It just happens that the female artists I listen to most often do calmer music... Enya, Eva Cassidy and The Corrs, for example. Great for relaxing, but I can't bring myself to call it rock. But I will mention:

- Fleetwood Mac
lots of great songs, but I love Stevie Nicks' energetic singing on f.ex. "Seven Wonders" and "Gypsy". Reminds me that I have yet to check out her solo work!
- Bonnie Tyler
mostly for her collaboration with Jim Steinman which led to "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and a divine remake of "Making Love out of Nothing at All"

There's a simplicity to Tom Petty's music and lyrics that I find quite attractive.  His lyrics typically use little to say a lot.  Hard to do, but he makes the listener work.  A lot of his stuff tends to sound the same, but, again, it rewards careful listening.  For the best experience, I recommend Wildflowers, which I think is his most complete album.

Re. Drive-by Truckers, their most recent offering, Brighter than Creation's Dark, is terrific, though they have just gone through some personnel reshuffling.  "A Ghost to Most" is a terrific song.  Their Southern Rock Opera is an absolute classic, and I'm rather partial to Dirty South as well.  They'll never break into the mainstream, because they're a little too honest...

Nothing is better than Bruce Springsteen.  And I really mean that.

Absolute nothingness is far superior to anything he has ever done.
An empty room with empty walls would hold my attention longer.

Pure American Pablum.

After looking closely at the lists, I say either women don't rock that well or we are a bunch of misogynists.  Wink

Blondie!?
Siouxsie Sioux !
Pat Benatar ??
Ani DeFranco
Bonnie Rait
Gwen Stefani
Kylie Minogue
Spiderbait !?
Tracey Chapman !
Ethel Merman

Almost as shocking as Pete Townsends revelations.  Geez, after listening to "Tough Boys" I was really uncertain.....Go back and listen to some of the Who lyrics now that we know about Pete's particularly pederasty picadilloes.

Creepy.

@Ostap:  I also like Pink Floyd.  Do you know The Violent Femmes?

Really loved "Add it Up" and "Blister in the Sun" off their first album, but haven't followed what they've done since.

I struggle to find contemporary rock that I really like (tips welcome!), but some of my recent favorites are:

The Jayhawks: Rainy Day Music
The Killers: Sam's Town, Day and Age

I like listening to the Killers.  "Hot Fuss" is also a good album.  I didn't like "Sam's Town" quite as much, although "When You Were Young" is one of my favorite new songs.

With contemporary rock I find particular songs I like easily enough, but it is more difficult to identify entire albums.  Maybe this has a bit to do with contemporary music distribution which seems to focus MUCH more on singles than in the past.  Or maybe I'm just getting old...

A few contemporary albums (for me this means in the last 10-15 years) that I enjoy listening to:

"Oh, Inverted World" and "Chutes Too Narrow" by the Shins. (Heard a few promising tracks off "Australia" and might add this to the list at some point).

"American Idiot" by Green Day (in another thread I remember one forum member describing Green Day as a "guilty pleasure" - maybe so!).

"Stop Drop and Roll" by Foxboro Hot Tubs (if, upon listening, you notice a similarity to Green Day, there's a good reason)

"Pretty. Odd." by Panic at the Disco (something Beatlesque about the song "Nine in the Afternoon")

I would not call Orbison, Dylan and the Byrds rockmusic, but let's be tolerant, so that I can name a few titles that usually are not thought of either.

-Mussorgsky's Gopak (at the end of Sorotsjinski Fair) and The Hut of Baba Yaga (part of Pictures at an Exhibition; of course the piano version)
-Tsjaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, First Movement
-Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King (with choir, but Ritchie Blackmore's interpretation is not to be despised either)
-Sibelius' Violin Concerto, Third Movement
-Sjostakovitsj' First Violin Concerto, Fourth Movement
-Sjostakovitsj' Tenth Symphony, Second Movement (though the bassoon in the Fourth Movement also rocks pretty hard)
-Cha(or Kha)tsaturian's Sabre Dance
-Ustvolskaja's Grand Symphony for Cello and Piano

Titles involving electrical instruments (possibly better known at this forum):

-Led Zeppelin I
-Deep Purple Machine Head (Remastered, CD-1)
-Therapy? Infernal Love
-Led Zeppelin II
-Uriah Heep Live 1973
-Gentle Giant Interview
-Deep Purple Made in Japan
-Status Quo Rockin' all over the World
-Therapy? Troublegum
-Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Welcome back my Friends

A few songs not to be found on these albums:
-Yes, Going for the One
-Rush, Xanadu
-Rainbow, Starstruck
-Pearl Jam, Rear View Window
-Chuck Berry, Johnny be good
-Gentle Giant, On Reflection (live version)
-Budgie, Crash Course in Brain Surgery
-The Kinks, You really got me
-Rory Gallagher, Moonchild
-The Free, Mr Big

To my standards all this stuff is tighter than anything The Band had to offer.

Some more contemporary offerings:

Drive-by Truckers
Bonepony
Don Chambers & GOAT

all do a Southern, alt-country, rock kind of thing in different ways.

Calexico also does some pretty smart stuff.  The Canadian band, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings also has a very sophisticated alt-country sound.  Blue Rodeo, too.  Along these lines, I don't think there's been a more consistently good songwriter than Lucinda Williams.  Nobody's mentioned Tom Petty yet, I don't think.

TalJechin & I have already sung Dylan's praises on a number of threads, and I'm also very partial to the Band; not sure there were too many rock outfits that were musically tighter than they were...

This thread makes me feel young, all kinds of music from way before I was born  Cool

More of an late 80s-early 90s kind of guy here: U2, Aerosmith, Metallica, Offspring and Queen and songs like Jump, Goodnight Saigon, Fight for your right, Roxanne.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.
