Nelson's mention of SRV (Stevie Ray Vaughan) has merit. A great guitarist who was sadly taken from us before his time.
For anybody (Nelson again!
) still labouring under the impression that Eric Clapton is 'God', perhaps a listen to SRV would be beneficial. Even EC spoke in reverential tones of this great bluesman. The rest is history.

AC/DC has the most boring bass player in the history of hardrock (with Scorpions as a close 2nd). And I have the habit to listen polyphonically ....
The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

What, No AC/DC SRV or ZZ top!!!!
You guys have no appreciation 'Rocking Blues' although I have maximum respect for Bob Dylan, The Doors and John Lennon prevuiosly mentioned.
Although "Eric Clapton is God"

MnB really has an excellent taste.
I would add Sabbath obviously, and early Judas Priest. Really great.
Of course anything by Bach.

I find the choir, representing the trolls, bursting out in "Slagt ham Kristmans son hat daret" absolutely thrilling. These are the only Norwegian words I know; alas I have forgotten the second line. And I could not even find them on Norwegian Wikipedia ....
I think what you refer to is "Slagt ham! Kristenmands søn har dåret Dovregubbens veneste mø!" which is transated to " Slay him! a Christian-man's son has deluded the Dovre-King's loveliest maid!" on this web page:
http://www.sitater.com/home/ibsen/peergynt/
Here you will find "Peer Gynt" both in Norwegian and English. That should give you an opportunity to learn more norwegian

I'm surprised that no-one seems to have mentioned Radiohead.
Well, I would categorise Radiohead as an "indie" band (same holds for Violent Femmes), but I suppose you are right if you assume this is a sub-category of "rock".
Myself I categorise (e.g. when talking to friends, using ipod etc.) under "rock" staff like Dylan, Stones (@drkodos: unbelievable I forgot them! + the other), Pink Floyd etc.
Under "indie" I see the Verve, Suede, Blur and the likes.
And under "new wave": Cure, Smiths, Joy Division, etc.

Mnb,
As a norwegian I have heard "I dovregubbens hall /Hall of the Mountain King" many many times - but dont ask me who played or which version is best...
I am afraid that my interest for classical music is quite new. Am I getting old ?....
If you have some preferences, please educate me
Speaking of Grieg - one favourite is "Solveig's song" (sung by Solveig Kringlebotn - I think...)
Avoid the Peer Gynt suites. They are commercialized versions. Assuming you know the story of Peer Gynt you will understand that this music must be played menacing (I just heard a cover by The Who and trust me, that s***s). I find the choir, representing the trolls, bursting out in "Slagt ham Kristmans son hat daret" absolutely thrilling. These are the only Norwegian words I know; alas I have forgotten the second line. And I could not even find them on Norwegian Wikipedia ....
What I like in Apocalyptica's interpretation is the way the band kept that menacing feel intact.
Btw they play The Unforgiven better than Metallica itself - I want to learn more about this band. Thanks.

The "Stones" have been englected.
Fred & Barney's feelings are hurt.
Brain Eno should not be left out.

@Ostap: I also like Pink Floyd. Do you know The Violent Femmes?
Really loved "Add it Up" and "Blister in the Sun" off their first album, but haven't followed what they've done since.
Still love "Add it Up", used to be one of my favourite songs as a teenager (was into new wave and indie music back then).
On the Led Zep debate: as a guitarist myself, Page was a huge inspiration (OK - Jimmy Hendrix is best, but Jimmy Hendrix was a genius / it took me ~10 years to fully appreciate his music and funnily this coincided while exploring another piece of genius - Coltrane).
I know that part of their mostly early music was 'borrowed' from the blues (Deep Purple mainly 'borrowed' from classical music) but imo this is not enough to diminish their own achievements (I especially happen to prefer their 'own' songs).
I'm trying to think of a good rock artist not already mentioned, well let's see: maybe Janis Joplin, Tim Buckley. For blues standards you can also consider Canned Heat (they have a rock blues sound).
And re the Beatles: Rubber Soul mentioned is one of their best albums but my clear favourite is Abbey Road..

Apocalyptica is my favourite - a "cello metal" band.
Hall of the Mountain King (- although quite a different version than what Mnb proposed, I guess
)
Have just listened to the live version - great.
