I thought it was very simple: White when it refers to a person, otherwise it is white.
White's advantage and a white advantage.
Or with football: the Blues are beating the cr@p out of the blue upstarts from London

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

That's how I use it. Being non-English/American/Canadian etcetera I am excused refusing to follow more complicated rules.
At the other hand I am glad to have learned a new word: putative.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

It boils down to this as far as I can see:  When "White" and "Black" are used as nouns, they are capitalized. When used as adjectives they are not. It is fairly straightforward no?

It can get even more confusing if Emory Tate is playing Jaan Ehlvest.  Wink

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

When to capitalize "white" and "black."

White and Black are the names of putative chess players, so when we speak of White's advantage, White's move, White's position, or White's side of the Caro-Kann, we capitalize. On the other hand, white and black are colors, so when we speak of the white pieces, we don't capitalize.  The most confusing case is when "white" and "black" are used neither to refer to the players nor literally to colors, but to a given side of a game of chess.  Here we do not capitalize; for example, when we speak a white advantage, the white side of the Caro-Kann or the white side of the board.

If there is a white advantage, then the advantage is to White.  The champion of the white pieces is the putative White.  And so on, and so forth.
