Yesterday I registered at IECG and could immediately start playing in an open tournament (5 players, round robin). The site looks very good to me so far, and if there should be small inconveniences, e.g. server timeouts, at a rate of 2 days per move this wouldn't bother me.

Then I rather pay a little and be sure that I don't encounter such problems at all - and have the possibility to take a vacation.

IECG does allow you to take vacations. But it depends on the time control of the tournament. For instance, I believe you cannot take vacation from rapid time control tourneys.

I would add my support for IECG where I've been playing happily since 2000. Yes, the server can be a little lazy at times, but IECG is generally well organised and professional, and one should remember it is run entirely by volunteers. There is a large membership with a wide ability range, so whatever your strength you should enjoy your chess there.

I think it's easy to give a misleading impression about the access problems at IECG. In my experience they are few and far apart and aren't significant anyway (but then I do only play 10-moves-in-40-days tournaments).

I suppose it's just this superfast age we live in, but I find it irritating when I click on something and the server takes two minutes to get back to me.  What actually happens is that I wander off to nytimes.com for a few minutes while I wait, and then return to find that I've been timed off the server.  Grrrr!

Yes, I agree, but do not forgot that it is all free. It is understandable that there are some problems, but better from nothing. I think that email chess is going to the past. And server play is more preferable. Just do not want to think about postal chess, even ICCF organize such tournaments.
recently i received an invitation for such a tournament where it was stated that the expenses will be around 400 EUR. So no idea...
Anyway, for me IECG is the best place for now and I hope that after the server update there will be less problems with the access.

I can recommend IECG (www.iecg.org). Membership is free and you can play by email or on the server. There are various tournament types - Rapids, Opens, World Champs, Cups, regular tournaments, etc. They have rating list (6 per year) and titles.
I play there since 1998 and I am quite happy wth the services.

In my experience, the quality of the opposition on IECG is extremely high.  However the IECG server, lss.chess-server.net, is not powerful enough to support the traffic there and annoying delays are unfortunately routine.  So are server crashes.  I find playing there so annoying that I expect soon to give it up.

One thing you should look for is the ability to take vacation.

there are already other threads on this. I recommend FICGS. I have tried many free sites from IECG to redhotpawn to schememinding and the list goes on. Nothing compares with FICGS imo.
