Which is why I restricted my question to the specific lines I gave above. See for instance Dvoretzky-Katalimov, Odessa 1972. Still I am not sure.
So in the Scandinavian Banker line White has an extra pawn (let's call this x), in the BDG an halfopen f-file (let's call this y).
Now is in the Scandinavian Banker White's advantage equal to or larger than x - y ?
If no then the conclusion is that Bf4 + Qd2 against the Bogoljubow Defence is insufficient.
I still wonder.

Indeed I was immediately reminded of Fischer-Robatsch (which was one of Fischer's 60 Memorable Games), but the two cases don't seem very comparable.  For instance, it would seem that in the BDG case it might be quite a decent idea for Black to play ...Bg4 at some point, which in the Fischer case would have just run into f3.

I'd never spotted this before, but 1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 exf3 5.Nxf3 is the same as 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd8 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3, except that White is missing a pawn on f2!  Thus the same goes for 5...g6 6.Bf4 Bg7 7.Qd2 in both cases (whereas the Studier Attack is not possible in the Scandinavian line).

Interestingly, in the Scandinavian line Fritz 10's openings book gives 5...Bf5, 5...Bg4 and 5...c6 for Black and White tends to respond in the same ways as in the Blackmar-Diemer.  Thus, thinking about it, the assessment of the BDG as a whole hinges on whether White's half-open f-file plus the advantages against the "Banker" in the Scandinavian are worth the lost pawn.

The ...g6 lines of the Banker came very close to being refuted outright by Fischer's preferred Bf4, Qd2, 0-0-0 approach so I think it doesn't bode badly for the BDG version.

For now I'll stick to meeting 5...g6 with 6.Bf4 and 7.Qd2 (unless this new book casts doubt on the idea, but I doubt that it will- the queenside castling, h-pawn hack idea is a common motif against a kingside fianchetto, think of the Yugoslav Attack for instance).  That is, if I ever meet 5...g6!

Still I wonder how to compare this with 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd8 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 g6 6.Bf4 Bg7 7.Qd2.

Remarks here implying that someone else's chess strength depends on a computer, and a rejoinder, have been deleted. Why anyone would assume, in a forum visited by many strong players, that he is the only one of them with a good otb game, I don't know. But ungracious remarks to that effect won't be tolerated.

This reminds me of the old discussions on the Englund Gambit where Black "prepares" the ...e5-thrust with ...a6 and/or ...h6, e.g. 1.e4 h6 2.d4 e5.   I also note that White actually lost the game given!

White sacrifices a pawn then has to play h3 and a3 consecutively to justify it? I didn't know BDG fanatics had a sense of humour.

Besides Houdini 1.5 gives 9...Ne8 10. d5 Nd6 11. Ba2 Ne5 12. Nxe5 Bxe5 13. Bf4 Bxf4 14. Rxf4 e5
15. dxe6 Bxe6 16. Bxe6 fxe6 with a slight advantage for Black. There's probably a better continuation for Black but since I prefer to play 4...c6 I'm too lazy to look for more.

Yes, my apologies- it wasn't obvious from the chapter & variation list, but it is certainly covered (as is the 5...Bf5 6.Bd3 suggestion earlier).  Looks like a very comprehensive coverage then, even though the foreword implies otherwise!

Looking at Amazon's preview, which shows the main variations covered, I'm intrigued to see that 5...c6 (and by implication 4...c6 5.Bc4) focuses on the traditional 7.0-0 approach rather than the newer ideas following 7.Bg5.

There is a discussion of 7.Bg5 from Buecker's chesscafe article on page 278. I found it by searching for "stefan". Although for some reason amazon doesn't want to show me that page anymore.

Another lesser one is 5...Bf5 met by 6.Ne5, I remember that in the latest Chesspub analysis this move appeared to give White some chances but that 6.Bd3 looked more promising.

Another reason to get the book and see what turns up, as I'm left wondering what Scheerer has found for White in those lines!

There now are pdf extracts from the book at http://www.everymanchess.com/chess/books/The_Blackmar-Diemer_Gambit%3A_A_modern_..., so maybe February now is realistic

There is more preview material on Amazon, and (if you have an account) you can even do book searches.
For owners of his previous book "Play 1...Nc6": in his BDG book he explains why he doesn't like 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.d5 for Black (via 1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.d5). Personally I think theory underestimates 4...Nb8, so I am curious what Scheerer recommends for White here. It's not in the preview material, but this book looks so interesting I think I'll buy it anyway.  Wink

That might be interesting. I should point out however, that 8 h3 Nc6 is hardly critical according to a recent game I played. The event was the Gambit Tournament in Ridgewood, New Jersey. We had to play two games with each opponent in a 4-player quad. In the first round, all players had to start with the King's Gambit Accepted, 1 e4 e5 2 f4 ef4; in the second, BDG Accepted; in the third, Smith Morra Gambit Accepted. I scored 4.5/6 and took first place.

NM Arthur William Feuerstein - Zilbermints
Ridgewood, NJ
31 January 2011
Game 10 minutes

BDG: Bogoljubow Defense

1 d4 d5 2 e4 dxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3 ef3 5 Nxf3 g6 6 Bc4 Bg7 7 00 00 8 h3 Nc6 9 a3!?

This is a new move. Much better than the speculative and tricky 9 Qe1 Nxd4 10 Qh4 Nf5.

9...Na5 10 Ba2 b6 11 b4 Nb7 12 Bg5 Nd6 13 Rfe1 Bf5 14 Ne5 e6 15 Qf3 Qe7 16 Nc6 Qd7 17 Ne5 Qe7 18 Nc6 Qd7 19 Rad1 Nh7 20 Be3 Ne8? 21 Ne7+ Qxe7 22 Qxa8 Qd6 23 Qxa7 eventually 0:1 much later.

So, after 8 h3 Nc6 9 a3!? seems to be a good move!

You are conflating two different variations.

No, I am not. I was curious how that transposition went. Now, after your explanation, I know that Bf5 is an inferior move after both 8.h3 and 8.0-0.
Thanks.

I'll concentrate on 8.h3 Nc6 and 8.Qe1 Bg4.

Yes, correct. But some people still play ...Bxc2. Not that this move is any good, though.
